Transverse lie - nearly 37 weeks with first baby.

Hi all,

At my last midwife appointment was told baby was in a transverse lie and would need to see a consultant. My appointment is tmrw, at which point I will be 37 weeks but am really nervous.

Have spent the last week walking around on all fours like a crazy person, and while i can feel baby move a little, little monkey then just moves right back! Obviously, most comfortable when horizontal, much like DH.

I was a bit confused at MW app, so didn't really ask any questions on what to expect at appointment with consultant and what procedures may be. Does anyone have any experience of this type of situation?

Any advice would be welcome x

The second of my twins was transverse.

I think that Internal Version is only attempted with the second of twins, after the first is born, perhaps because the larger uterus leaves more room to move a baby than in a singleton pregnancy? So I don't think it will be suggested to you. Just on the offchance that you are worrying about that, though, I had attempted Internal Version. I only had gas and air and it was really not all that painful, though very odd. It didn't work and I had an emergency caesarean. My daughter had bruises from the manhandling before birth and we had an ultrasound when she was a week old just to check it hadn't dislocated her hip. It was fine.

Will be watching with interest. Am 36+5 and doc thinks baby is transverse after this mornings appt.

She has called the hospital to get me in for a scan.

I was really feeling it in my pelvis groin the past few days so was convinced the head was engaged even more then it was last week at consultants appt.

Why are you walking around on all fours?

To be honest, as I am not being let go beyond 40 weeks. I was hoping to go into natural labour sooner or had decided to have an elective CS at 40 so dont mind if the decision is taken out of my hands by a transverse lie.

Salleroo - was told to walk on all fours as this can encourage baby into head down position...as i said before, doesn't seem to be working as still have two bumps either side of bellybutton - one for head, one for bum!

Bit disappointed to have this at quite late stage, baby had been head down until last check and was also feeling very, i don't know, heavy(?) in pelvic area so was hoping to be told head was engaged.

Thank l39 for your info on Internal version. Have heard mixed things about success/pain.

My bump looks really normal, I'm wondering if doc was just not 'feeling properly'

Read you could also shine a torch or play music to your pelvis to get the head down!

Then I got onto other not so pleasant reasons for transverse lying babies and stopped, will wait and see what the scan shows.

God I hate pregnancy.

i was the same at 36-39 weeks and then baby turned without any help at all with one week to go (first baby)

however, her head was large and it didnt engage very well so there was not much time for her head to push down and widen the area - i tried natural labour but it just wasnt working so had a csection. I dont know if head size is one factor in why the babies become transverse - eg cant get down into position very well. just ask the consultant lots of questions - i am sure baby can still get in to position, but you could ask why he/she thinks it is transverse
