hi ladies

i have been over and over the double buggy dilemma a million and one times and it boils down to i have to get one no matter what so...

ds will be 19 months when ds2 comes along in september.

i have been looking at the phil and teds which i would absolutely love but it is ridiculously expensive and dp is refusing to spend a fortune on a buggy when we spent £400 on ds1 buggy and only got a few months use out of it as i swithed cars and it no longer fitted in the boot

so i need a compact double buggy suitable for newborn and 19 months old - any ideas?

also i am looking for recommendations on a car seat - ds1 was a nightmare to fit and a bugger to get him strapped in. again we have not got a huge budget - any ideas?

thankyou for your help!! xx

I think I have decided if we have another soonish (I'm not pregnant ) that I would go for a 2nd hand Maclaren Techno double over a phil and teds.

I have a XTS Twin Twister, they go for around £150 on ebay, and have very good sized seats, and also lay flat for new baby. Plus mine is only 76 inches wide, and fits through my front door!

ThePhantomPlopper · 08/05/2009 16:08

Was going to say Phil and Teds, but see DH has said nope.

We got a Maclaren double buggy at first, it was awful, really heavy and hard to steer so we swapped for a P&T.

Have you thought about a sling for the newborn to begin with, might be easier for a while.

yes i have a baby bjorn which i used for ds1 whilst shopping etc but he only had a couple of months use out of it as his birth weight was 9pounds and i found it a bit of a strain on my back walking around with him as he got bigger.

will look up the buggys mentioned.

Could you not get a P&T second hand?

We bought the P&T in the sales after Christmas for DS & baby due later this month. We tried out a few in Mothercare an by far preferred it to other doubles.

We have the MaxiCosi Cabrio Fix carseat which will attach to th P&T and also the Quinny I had for DS so I can use either.

I had an 18 months gap between mine and got a M&P one - I think it was the twin aria? It was side by side but fitted through our front door, and although I don't particularly like M&P I chose it because it was light - about 7.5kg from memory which was the same as my original single pushchair. It was also really easy to fold up and down. Used it every day for 18 months, then gave it away to someone who was just about to have her second. She told me she took it back to them and had it reconditioned for something like £50, so even if you see a second hand one that isn't in the best condition it's worth finding out about repair services either from the manufacturer / retailer, or just in Yellow Pages. The wheel fell off my mclaren the other day and we found a local shop that does repairs to all makes.

Oh, and although the side by side ones can be a problem in tiny shops (so if you live somewhere nice with lots of small independents rather than the average boring high street like here) they are much easier to get up and down kerbs, on and off buses and trains, so if this isn't too obvious, think about when you will use it.

Well I am officially a pramaholic!!! I have a 3 years old and a two year old and DC3 on the way.

I have had 15 prams (I kid you not) in 3 years. 4 of these have been doubles so I speak from experience!!

I tried a stroller and buggy board when dd1 was about 18 months and dd2 was born but dd1 was too young to stay on it for long and would get off and run around in shops so I wouldn't recommend that.

I had a kidz cargo tandem - absolutely awful to steer and very heavy.

I had a maclaren Techno twin side by side - heavy, very hard work up hill and drifficult to get round narrow ailes in shops.

I als had a cossato duet lite which looked great and very stylish but was very difficult to steer, front heavy with the toddler in the front seat and therefore difficult to get up curbs and hills.

I then relented and spent £400 on a P&T and it's the best thing I have ever bought for the kids. Has been used every day for 2 years and have never looked back. Was hard to accept the cost at first but worth every penny. I walk everywhere and couln'd get out and about without it.

I would suggest you sell your single pram on ebay and put the money towards a P&T from ebay if you can get one to save some money.

Good luck!!

jkklpu · 08/05/2009 21:58

Don't buy till you know what dc2 is like: might not be huge so could stay in a sling until ds is fine with a buggy board. Also depends what kind of life you lead, eg use public transport loads or push buggy and car only. In the latter case, the weight/foldability matter much less.

OonaghBhuna · 08/05/2009 22:31

Have a good look on ebay as others have suggested. I used the double Urban from Mountain Buggy, its a great pram, lightweight but very sturdy, easy to use.

PinkyMinxy · 08/05/2009 22:41

I would go for the Phil &Teds. It's about the best one you can get. I do know a few people have had problems with the quality of the sport, so I would suggest getting a second hand V2- ours has been used and abused for 3 years now and has lasted really well. I used it more when I hadmy first two DC (16 and a bit monhs apart),but I actually sit all three of them on it now, sometimes.

My usual combination really is my bug bee and a wrap sling, but on food shopping trips and days out that require STUFF the P&T is in it's element.(I don't drive}.

winogal · 08/05/2009 22:45

I can't recommend the Out'n'about nipper 360 highly enough - incredibly light to push and easy to steer. Purchased it when DS2 was born, DS1 was 23 months at the time. 6 months on, it's the best money I ever spent. Although DS2 is keen to walk/scooter lots these days, there are still plenty of occasions that I thank the lord for the double buggy! And even though it's a side by side model, I haven't yet come across a doorway I can't fit through.

PinkyMinxy · 08/05/2009 22:46

Must add.. the reasons the bug bee is so good are that I can swap between DD1 and baby DD2 without altering the buggy. DD1 really likes sleeping in it, and it folds flat and is parent-facing.

iamamummy · 09/05/2009 11:22

wow thanks ladies you have given me lots of research to do!!!

i intend to purchase off of ebay but will be touring all the baby shops for demos and car fittings.

a few friends have the P&T and i do absolutely love it its just the cost factor but i intend selling my single buggy which was hardly used so maybe there is some hope of getting the buggy of my dreams..

i drive but mainly walk everywhere as we live in a town and its quicker to walk than drive.

i shall start my research, thanks again

I have an 18 month age gap between mine. We also thought of the P&T's but is expensive and I don't like that the bottom seat has no protection iyswim, so we got the cosatto duet light which is a tandem. I didn't want a side by side because of possible fighting in a few months time. The wheel base isn't actually that much bigger than a single pushchair, is easy to push and is easy to get on public transport.
