High fetal heart rate at 12 week scan, anyone?

Hi,
I have just come back from my nuchal scan, which was all absolutely fine - all measuring in line with EDD (am 11+6), v low risk for chromosomal abnormalities (1:26486), 1mm nuchal translucency, nasal bone present etc, and was feeling really happy, when at the end the Dr said 'we will need to see you in 10 days because the heart rate is a bit fast' - it was 178 BPM. So now I am freaking out! They told me that the most likely explanation is that it responds to maternal heart rate and adrenaline (and I must admit to getting overly anxious about the scan - was in tears before I got in the room) so am desperately hoping it is this (already I am turning my baby neurotic... oh dear) but just wondering if anyone has had experience of this before? And if it turned out to be all OK and nothing v much?? (please!!)
Thanks in advance.

That's reassuring, LeninGrad. I think King's are a bit fussy, maybe.
Anyone else?

In the early part of pregnancy, the normal range for a foetal heart rate is around 165, so 178bpm is probably just on the higher side of normal.

The heart rate does slow down as pregnancy progresses and a new born baby can have a resting heart rate anywhere from 90-140bpm.

I wouldn't worry too much, hope all goes well for review!

my dds was really fast..... not sure of numbers..... someone told me girls are faster anyway???

katster37 · 11/05/2009 17:28

Yes I had heard that, sparkycheerymummy, and my own heart rate is quite fast naturally, so am just hoping it is a girl who takes after her mum! Just seems ages 'til next Tues, although the Dr didn't seem too concerned... But I am!

Babies respond hugely to Mum's adrenaline levels. I strongly suspect that this will be due to the fact that you got into such a state!

Therefore don't worry if it's a bit high again as I can't imagine you will be a lot happier about the whole thing next time. On the other hand, knowing that you have a lovely normal babe in there maybe you will be a bit calmer.

We just had 12 week scan at Kings (Harris Birthright Centre) and had a similar experience to Katster37. . . .told everything absolutely fine during the scan. I'd heard from a friend that they weren't very chatty during scans there so made a point of asking them to talk us through what they were doing. They said everything was fine. The baby was really active and bloods and nuchal thickness were also all fine which was such a relief.

It was just as we were about to leave that they said we had to come back in a week as the foetal heart rate was "high" at 173. Also told that if result was high in a week we would have special cardiac scanning. My sister is an obs and gynae consultant and has reassured us that all is OK (fact that the baby was so active and we were all a bit nervous could easily explain the high rate)

The way this was communicated to us was not great. Now we're holding our breath until next week. . .

What was the outcome for you guys? Was the higher heart rate a problem? @BodSquad @katster37

I know @KittyCatsby, not hurting anyone - I’m just curious and if they get an email notification then they might be able to tell me - there are no other more recent ones
