High WBC count??

Just had my results back from my 28 week blood test (which I actually had taken at 32 weeks) and the white blood cell count was 19000, so the midwife has advised that I have another blood test taken in two weeks time. However, when I asked her what they will do if it is still raised in two weeks time, she said they will just send me for another blood test two weeks after that. By that time I would be pretty much due to have the baby, as I am 33+5 at the mo!!

I don't feel ill at the moment, and my urine was tested at the midwife appt where I had the bloods taken and that was fine.

How high is that WBC count considering that I am nearly 8 months pregnant? And also, what is the point in having these blood tests when they don't actually do anything with this information other than send me for continuous blood tests.

The problem is my DP lost his first wife to Leukemia, which they discovered in a routine blood test at 28 weeks. Obviously, he is now drawing all kinds of conclusions from this high count, and I'm not really informed enough to reassure him, as I dont really know how high this count is. I'm not suggesting for one second that I could be in the same situation- more looking for information that would reassure him. He just feels like the Midwife/ Dr's should be doing more, and I dont really know if he is right??

Any help would be very much appreciated!!! xx

Make an appointment to talk to your GP about it and explain the circumstances re your DP's 1st wife.

hi worriedamy, this might be a bit vague but just looked this up and a normal range is apparently 4000 to 11000, and common causes of a raised count include infection and pregnancy. That might not be all that useful, but I'd try to bear in mind that if there was likely to be a more worrying explanation then the midwife would be more concerned and referring you to the hospital team. I hope you can get more detailed reassurance from your GP.

Don't know about pregnancy but my sis had a raised wbc we panicked it was an ear infection she hadn't yet began to feel the symptoms of.

Thanks for your help everyone.

Personally I dont think its anything to worry about, and I am a bit reluctant to go for endless blood tests when they arn't really going to do anything with the results that they get. Its just DP has these niggling doubts which I can totally understand, and I dont really know what I can say to reassure him!! Everthing I look up on the internet gives the 4000-10000 normal bracket, but says this can be increased during the final month of pregnancy- I'm just not sure what it is meant to increase to?

I had this during my pregnancy, was outside the normal bracket, told me it was an infection or pregnancy related and they left me to it, no retests or anything.

I had the GP call me today to tell me that my WBC count was high.

i'm 27 weeks pregnant.

I'd been feeling dizzy so they did some blood tests.

he said it was likely an infection and not to worry, they're retesting in a week, but he was loathe to give antibiotics without other symptoms.
