Dear All

I'm 19 weeks PG (or 18+4 days) with Number 2 & my waters broke just over a week ago. I have a low lying placenta too and have had bleeding since 15 weeks PG. I am on bedrest at home after 2 stays in hospital and now trying to avoid infection. A scan at the fetal assessment unit yesterday confirmed that baby ok and the fluid has increased slightly. Although the doctors say the prognosis (ahydramnois) is poor I am trying to stay very positive and take each day as it comes. Has anyone experienced this before or know of anyone who has expeienced this? Thanks x

I haven't, but I just wanted to send you some prayers and good vibes. Hoping all works out for the best.

Hello

My waters went last time at 22+4 due to infection. We were given a very very grim prognosis aswell and told our babys lungs wouldnt develop properly as i never really had any fluid after the inital rupture so he wouldnt survive.

Ds arrived at 27 weeks by emsc and opened his eyes and breathed for himself immediatly (but wore himsef out so spent 4 weeks on Cpap), he spend 10 weeks in scbu and was oxygen dependant for a fair while but contry to what we were told his lungs did work.

He's home now and fine

You've done wonderfully to get to a week after your prom. I was told if i got thought he first few days without going in to labour then i stoppd a good chance of staying pregnant for a while. Its was 5 weeks in the end.

How are the monitoring you, are you on antibiotics etc ?

There are a few of us on here that have had a pprom, i am sure more people will come and post their experiences soon enough.

Your doing the right thing staying positive

this site kept me sane

Taking temp every 4-6 hours and in twice a week for blood tests and fetal monitoring not on antibiotics as no infection so far and they don't want to mask any possible infection. If temp goes up or feel unwell etc then straight back in to hosp. Am really pleased it worked out well for you and your DS is doing well! x

Fingers and toes crossed!

I am surprised they've not given you antibiotics. I was on started Eurythrthomcin for 10 days and from what i have read thats usually the way they treat everyone with prom. Are you having any vaginal swabs taken ?

natfrank · 08/05/2009 13:36

Was just looking at that website - excellent information.

I am back in on Monday morning but I might call them today to ask re antibiotics. Have had swabs and they have been clear so far.

Nat this happened to me at exactly the same time but hosp refused to scan me three times, so they didn't think my membranes had and sadly I subsequently got an infection. My swabs were also clear the first 3 times I went to hosp. I also had some bleeding and we later found out the placenta had partially abrupted

HOWEVER after sharing my experience with friends I heard of 3 cases 1 at 16 weeks 1 at 19 weeks and 1 at the same time as me where the baby was a twin, where the babies had survived even though they were born prem, one pregnancy actually went to 35 weeks. All these people were under hosp care like you. It sounds like your waters are replenishing like them too yey. I really really do think they should be giving you prophylactic antibiotics though - I had no high temperature when I had my infection and it was the placenta which became infected, not a vaginal infection.

Please stay in bed as much as poss - have they told you about infection prevention - its on the kanalen website anyway.

Thinking of you x

Owlingate · 08/05/2009 16:26

Just realised my post was really depressing - bear in mind that my placenta was also starting to fail so my baby probably wouldn't have made it even if the hospital hadn't been totally crap and refused to check the fluid around my baby. Your situation is already loads better than mine as my waters also continued to drain out over the following week and baby was completely dry when they finally scanned me x

justtheone · 08/05/2009 23:30

Hi natfrank, I started leaking fluid at 20 weeks and was diagnosed with PPROM. It was my first, the prognosis was very poor and I was not very well prepared for the shock. I was told to avoid stress and within a week I had given up work.

DS was eventually born at 32 weeks and weighed 1.4kg. Like WMs child he did not need ventilation but was on CPAP and in SCBU for 10 weeks. He came home on oxygen and was off it at 10 months. He is now a very healthy, bright 8 year old and you would never know that he was a prem.

For me the most important thing was to stay positive and to stay off my feet (preferably lying down). I found that the waters were replenished but that I could have a gush when I stood up, so the best things for the baby was to stay lying down. This must be very difficult for you with another child.

The consultant warned me that there was to be no internal examination because of the fear of infection. So everytime I went into hospital (I had a few scares) I warned the junior doctors not to do an internal.

I did not have any medication until 31 weeks. Then I had antibiotics and something to help the lungs mature. I also visited SCBU the week before DS was born. If you haven't been there before it is worth asking if you can visit. It was very reassuring to see the wonderful care that they give to these tiny babies.

There was so many PPROM babies that have had wonderful outcomes. So please, please stay positive and keep us posted on this thread.

Hi Thanks again for all your message I have been back in hospital for 4 days, back home again now on bedrest. I have antibiotics now as my temp increased very slightly but so far no sign of infection. Had further scan on Monday which conf'd no fluid again but I think like justtheone I am leaking. Back in tomorrow for check up, more blood tests. Baby's heartbeat was strong at the last listen in yesterday and can feel movement. Will be 19 weeks tomorrow. Keeping postive and staying as horizonal as possible!!!

Glad to hear you're on antibiotics have been wondering how you've been getting on. Just hold on in there for four more weeks at least natfrank's baby! You may find you feel movements a lot more as there is nothing to cushion the blows, I did

justtheone · 14/05/2009 19:30

Natfrank, glad you are resting. Just remember to try to keep horizontal as much as possible. I found it very difficult as I was used to a very active life. I felt absolutely fine and wanted to run around to get ready for DS. But horizontal is the best as the fluid will replenish and won't leak.

Also, I never felt DS move!!! Not even one little kick. As I mentioned earlier this lack of movement was what prompted them to finally check the fluid levels.

I'll be thinking about you.

natfrank · 14/05/2009 19:40

Thanks been for check up today and all still ok, going to the Fetal Medicine Unit at St Georges Hospital (London) tomorrow for a more detailed scan. Fingers crossed for that. Baby is moving quite alot which has been reassuring

PS what did you do while you were bed resting??!

OP posts:
WorzselMummage · 14/05/2009 20:55

OO i have been thinking about you

Glad to hear your doing ok.

bedrest.. tbh i MN'd constantly and watched films and tried ( usually unsucessfully ) to sleep. I had a post on here 'my waters went at 22+4' it was called and i used it more like a blog really, I should have started a blog, dunno why it didnt occur to me but anyway, i found that really helpfull and it was nice to have someone to 'talk' to.

Like Justtheone I never really felt DS move much after a while, he was so squashed he couldn't move so if your feeling a lot of movement then thats a definate good sign

WorzselMummage · 18/05/2009 10:07

How are things going now Natfrank ?

natfrank · 18/05/2009 14:10

Been to FAU today, heartbeat strong/regular and all other obs normal. Seem not to be leaking for 2-3 days and then have a gush of fluid. Hopefully those lungs are getting some fluid at some point even if its not for long. Am back in bed mumsnetting! Back to clinic on Thursday for scan/see consultant. Thanks for checking on me

I just wanted to let you know that I became really ill last week and after 5 days in hospital and 4 blood transfusions Ruby was born asleep on Friday 22nd May at 9.30am. Mother Nature took over and she was born at 20 weeks and 1 day. She was tiny but perfect.

Thanks you for much for all your support over the last few weeks x
