hiya just wondering if anyone has given birth at the Paisley Royal Alexandria Maternity Unit and what did you think of the facilities/care received?
I have the choice of giving birth at the Inverclyde Community Midwife Led Unit or Paisley, this is my first baby and not sure where to give birth.

Any recommendations would be appreciated

I had an early scan at the RAH and the Consultant was really horrible although some subsequent care I received was absolutely fine. I opted to go the extra mile and have my baby at The Queen Mum's.
I have no experience of the Midwife Unit although personally I'd want more options than a Midwife Unit could offer.
Don't forget you can actually go to any hospital you like and what's important is that you feel totally confident where you're going.
Best of luck!

hi Laura! i had DS at hte RAH last June and thought it was just fantastic! the labour ward had just been done up as were the wards. ante-natal care great, the classes were great too! i found the staff of labour ward really good I ended up with an emergency section was all stressful but the staff were so kind.

The ward staff were busy but still had time to give lots of help with BF and also took DS one night so i could sleep!

Food is awful though ;-( !!!

anything else you want to know, just ask! who is your consultant?

i am looking forward to going back again! not yet though! x

I had my DS at the RA in 06.

I couldn't fault the care during the actual labour, but they did tend to fend forget i was there when i was up in the ward. They seemed a bit over stretched TBH, but this was 2 years ago.

ThePhantomPlopper · 09/05/2009 21:44

tend to fend forget! Don't what i was trying to type there lol.

hiya everyone thanks for your replies!

Lib not been assigned a consultant as yet as going through a GTT on Tuesday so will find out more in around 1 weeks time. Do they have different facilities available like birthing pools etc?

My SIL has given birth there and has beeen reassuring me that RAH was good just would have been nice using the community midwife unit at Inverclyde.

I haven't as Vale of Leven still had a Maternity Unit when I had DD but I know plenty of women who have as that is where we get sent now (am in Helensburgh) and I've never heard anything bad about it.
My neighbour insisted on Queen Mum's for all three of hers and wouldn't go to VOL for her first (when it was open obv) but I have no idea why and another friend who had her first three at Queen Mum's as she lived near at the time preferred Paisley when she had her fourth!

Lib76 · 10/05/2009 10:02

Laura!

the mlu has a pool, the unit seems lovely as we were shown round during ante-natal classes. I knew from outset i was in clu, which to be honest i was happy about as i wanted more options with regards to pain relief etc. friend of mine gave bith in pool at RAH and loved it!

it really is a nice wee maternity unit. Im getting broody again thinking about it all!!! x

I'm waiting to be asked when I have mu booking in appt. I had Tom down in England, in the same hospital I was born, so have no idea about here. I would probably pick Queen Mums as thats the one right next door to Yorkhill and we know how to get there. VOL is closer but am not sure if they let you give birth there if you have any complications (friend was saying that). With Tom I had a 3rd degree tear, placental abruption and his cord was in a knot!

I remember the food where I had Tom was quite nice, lol. We had fish and chips one night . DC2 is due 20th Dec I think, so may end up having my xmas dinner there!

Hi laura i have just had my 3rd baby 3weeks ago at rah and the staff where really lovely the labour ward was really nice and clean and we were treated great throughout. although i can deff agree the food IS awful! but if you go early and get a salad you cant go wrong!

My 2 pervious babies were born at inverclyde and most of my pre-natal care was at inverclyde but i loved giving birth there also the mw are really nice and the labour rooms are lovely also!

I had the choice of inverclyde again this time but in the end i had to be induced early so i had no option but to go to rah, i have been told a lot off horror stories about rah but it was nothing like some people where describing. i had a very good experience there even with induction so no complaints!

Hi again,
The Queen Mum's is still open; I'm having my C-Section there tomorrow, but not sure how longer it will remain so. The fact it's beside Yorkhill and every specialist you could need is there is the major pull for me. However, just to confuse you even more, I've heard fantastic things about The Southern General and I know they have birthing pools etc.

needsomesleepplease · 11/05/2009 23:17

Hi I'm going into the QM's on friday for a section. The QM's is closing at the end of this year which is a shame i had DD there 2 yrs ago by em section and could not fault them in any way. A few of my friends have been to the RAH in the last few months and to be honest they havent had a nice thing to say about the care they recd. One is going to ask for a birth debrief to highlight her concerns and complaints, but at the moment she is still finding it hard to talk about what happened.

But i'm sure you will hear good and bad stories about every hosp if you dig deep enought - go with your gut instinct.

Lib76 · 12/05/2009 11:39

needsomesleepplease, It's true you will hear good and bad things about all mat units. I have friends who have had babies at the RAH in last few months and loved and I have a pal who wouldn't step foot in queen mums again!

Laura, i would really recommend the RAH it is such nice little maternity hospital with lovely new facilities.

angelzzzzz · 17/05/2009 22:42

i have too opt for paisley royal as i have that strep b thing and cant deliver at the vale of leven as its only midwife based gutted bout that as i had my first two there loved it and its local, wont go to the queen mothers my aunt had the worst experience ever

Blottedcopybook · 20/05/2009 11:27

I had two horrible deliveries at the Southern and their interventionalist attitude meant my sister ended up with a baby in SCBU. I wouldn't set foot back in there if you paid me!

I've heard fantastic things about the RAH's support post-birth and had to visit their triage when I was 25w with DD1. The hospital looks a little on the dilapidated side but I think it's been done up since I was there. The care I experienced was fantastic though.

Queen Mum's is a pain in the backside for parking!

Lib76 · 21/05/2009 14:31

Blottedcopybook yeh my sister and a few friends had terrible experinces at the southern hence the reason i opted for RAH, it was just great all done up now and it's lovely. your right, RAH offers good post-birth support and ante-natal care also fab! def going back!

OhBurger · 21/05/2009 17:46

I have gave birth at the VOL, QM, and the RAH, i have to say that they were all great, I'm once again desperate to go to the VOL midwife led unit, it's really nice and the midwifes are brill too.
