sorry if this is really obvious to everyone but me, but will eating a lot of sugar during pg lead to gest diabetes? unfortunately, my craving for the last few weeks has been kids pure sugar sweets; i am trying not to have too many but not doing too well. I am , however, particularly worried about gest diabetes. i know they are no good for me or the baby really but that's easier said than done when you NEED them!!

no. I think other factors, heredity, weight gain have more influence.

Although if you can keep within reasonable limits of sugar intake it would be better all round.

Trouble is, you m ay not know whether your heredity may make you more susceptible to GD. Certainly you need to limit your intake of sugar. Sorry. If you are diagnosed with GD, you may find that your labour is far more medicalised than you may wish, even if you get your sugar levels under control. Much better to get on top of it now, than to find yourself with problems later on.

How many weeks are you? I found that most of my cravings switched off after 3months. Or at least became controlable!

thanks margo and PC. I'm nearly 24 weeks. this sweets thing has come on in about the last 3 weeks. i had ms for the first 15/16 weeks so didnt eat mcu but now i just want sweets, not even chocolate or cakes or biscuits but crappy kids sweets!
One of my sisters had borderline gd with one of her babies but the others didnt and i was ok with my first dc, but i realise this doesnt mean i'm not at risk. I've not put on too much weight at this stage.

I will try to cut down gradually, i have enough worries about childbirth without giving myself extra ones that maybe could be avoided.thanks again.

Hi Olivio - I asked MW about this and she said that it can contribute but its not the only factor. I had my GD test today and have been craving sugar like no tomorrow recently so I am praying the test is negative so I can indulge a little bit!

Hi Olivio,

I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks after a routine GTT because my Mum has type 2 diabetes. Strangely your OP has triggered a memory in my brain that I was also craving kids sweets - Haribo in particular.

Annoying that I've been diagnosed considering that I've NEVER been overweight and have always had a really healthy diet... Unfortunately for me, I am not just diet managed but on the insulin aswell.

But, I have to say that having the daily insulin injections and watching what I eat has not been as difficult as I expected. So don't worry. Besides, I know that my little girl (first baby) will be worth it when she arrives!! I've only got 4-5 weeks to go so there is a light at the end of the tunnel now.

Good luck!!

xx

thanks BB2B and Dawn. I am going to try and cut down but nice to know that it may not be too bad. it's been love hearts, sherbet things and flying saucers mostly - sweet, sugary and fizzy and utter crap!
it's been worse this week as i've been off work. saying that, i am now drinking no sugary drinks, they were the only thing i could keep down when i was being sick.

dawn - good luck with your last few weeks.

The amount of sugary cr@p I have been eating, I am somewhat worried I may end up giving birth to a jelly baby.

But my GTT results came back negative.
