it seems a minor thing, and common. However, went to see consultant yesterday.
He offered to do a sweep, which i agreed to

However on examination, he told me that this baby is nowhere near ready to arrive, he stated my cervix were perfect for pregnancy, but no good for labour. He said my cervix were that far back he could just about feel it, and it wasnt ready, and he is almost sure even if i was left until 42 weeks, that i wouldnt be ready then either.

Ive had 3 other pregnancies, which were all 39+2 days and then and then all perfectly normal quick labours.

He has arranged for me to be induced on saturday the 9th, and has told me that there is no way im going to go before this date.

He stated they would try for 3-4 days of inducing me, but didnt sound hopeful, then a c-section is going to be the final outcome.

I accept if needed a c-section will be ok.

Im just stunned that after 3 normal births, was expecting this would be the same

Ima tad upset about it, as it was very unexpected
Has anyone else been in this situation, and what was the final outcome?

Thanks in advance for all replies

Perhaps this baby just needs a bit more time. Can you get some more advice, perhaps from a midwife as they see a wider range of cases, rather than just the abnormal. Hope fully someone will come along and say that they were told similar and everything worked out fine. Are you happy to start induction on the 9th if it comes to that? You don't have to be induced if there is no true medical reason for it. I wish you well and hope this week is fruitful.

rainbowdays · 02/05/2009 16:06

With my 2nd baby, I was told that my cervix was no where near ready and that it would be at the earliest days before I gave birth despite having strong contractions. I gave birth a few hours later!!!!!! Sometimes what the doc's and midwives think is not always the case.

When I got told the same thing at 39 weeks with my 3rd pregnancy, I took EPO (internally as well as orally) in order to soften the cervix, I am certain it worked and hence lovely birth no tears (as it softens the whole area!).

Anyway, I think that you should not worry overly about the doc's thoughts on your cervix, but consider all the natural induction techniques that you can muster!!! I hope it goes well.

3littlefrogs · 02/05/2009 16:15

Did you ask him where he got his crystal ball?

reikizen · 02/05/2009 16:17

What a load of bollocks! Seriously. There is no way he can tell you when you will go into labour. Especially if this is baby number 3 your cervix can go from 0 to fully sooo quickly. I once examined a woman and found her to have a posterior, thick cervix at the start of labour. 45 mins later her waters broke and baby was out within minutes. A woman who has had a baby before is referred to as a 'multip' and once you have had a baby the cervix is always slightly open, known as a 'multip's os'. This in effect means that your body does not have to do a lot of the work it does first time around to get the cervix ready for labour. I would expect your cervix to be thick and posterior as you are not even in labour! Jesus, don't waste time worrying about it! Please.

welshbyrd · 02/05/2009 17:47

the midwife who was present at the examination questioned the consultant, and his reply no way, her cervix are in tenby ( a town about 30 miles away from the hospital)

Just as some women will walk around the last few weeks 3-4 cm dilated before labour starts, so will others be told that they are no where near, and labour starts 2 days later. There is no way to know for sure....only speculation. One reason why pelvic exams the last few weeks don't mean a great deal. Is there a particular reason he wants to induce at 41 weeks?

CarGirl · 02/05/2009 21:51

Well with my 4th dc induced at 42 weeks, 6 hours after the first pessary my bishops score was a monumental 1. Baby arrived 5 hours after the 2nd pessary.

Try not to worry it could well change with hours or day or two.

eeky · 02/05/2009 22:26

look, that's just rubbish. If it's your first pregnancy, then your cervix will tend to be like this anyway, and sometimes induction fails - as it may do in anyone. I think the state of your cervix then tends to be "blamed" for the failed induction...!

However, in 3 previous normal deliveries, if I was your obstetrician I would not be concerned at all what your cervix is like. It can change pretty much in minutes in a multip. It is standard practice (and NICE guidelines) to offer induction by term +14, due to the sharply increased risk of stillbirth due to placental failure after this date. I cannot see any reason to delay after this, but wasn't sure from your post what gestation your induction was booked for - you can wait till T+14 if you wish, as long as you are happy with baby's movements.

Things may have changed completely by the time you go in - please don't worry. The chances of a failed induction needing a CS are VERY slim in a fourth baby. Maybe some natural prostagladins in the meantime if you're up to it?!

eeky · 02/05/2009 22:34

in case anyone thinks I mean anything from herbal shop, I meant a bit of nookie

treedelivery · 02/05/2009 22:43

Cor! That consultant is either

a) saying it because he knows he will trigger a straight forward labour with no problemo and he'll look a berk but it will get you a great delivery. Just by saying it!!

b) he is really not worried about looking a berk, and wants to protect you a bit, from expecting loads to happen soon. He is happy to be totally wrong and is assuming better expect a long long wait than be really gutted when each day passes. Sort of paternal instinct.

c) is plain daft (grin)

You could have had the baby by midnight, there is no way of knowing midnight of which day though. Thats the bugger.

I was 5 or 6 cms for bloody ages, then delivered in about 20 mins. The body really sings to it's own very unpredictable tune after number 2.

liahgen · 02/05/2009 22:48

Welsh

My last client, (doula) had exam on the friday, I was present. Cervix very posterior, mw couldn't even reach it, still 3cms thick, (as thick as normal)no signs at all.

Sunday early hours, labour starts, baby born 7.13pm Sunday night.

Please don't get despondent cos of insensitive consultant, Cons are not pg experts, they come in when there is a problem usually. Mother nature has a way of surprising us sometimes.

Try and stay positive, sex, nipple stimulation, (try a pump)

Also, you do not have to accept induction on the 9th, you can quite happily, (if you want to) go for expectant management, monitoring daily, and the baby will come when it's ready. Blimey what is it with cons and bloody CS's. ?

You'll be fine, 3 normal births, no prob,

ovenchips · 02/05/2009 22:50

I went in for a cervical sweep at 41 weeks with second child. The midwife tried but said cervix was so high and 'unripe' that she couldn't even do the sweep and launched into a discussion of possible induction dates cos there was no chance of anything happening in near future. I left very, very glum.

Returned 12 hours later in middle of night about half way through labour . The same midwife was then dragged out of bed to be the second person needed to be present for the actual birth and nearly didn't make it. She nearly fell over when she saw it was me she'd been called in for.

pooka · 02/05/2009 22:52

Bollocks. My midwife tried to do a sweep just after 40 weeks, said couldn't because was too far back. Had a little jiggle around, but said unlikely anything would happen soon.

Had show for the next couple of days, then ds arrived at 41 weeks. Midwives were very surprised - so much so that the group practice had no one on call for my homebirth!

In the meantime I also had sex and did lots of nipple stim.

treedelivery · 04/05/2009 13:47

Has Welshbyrd had a baby?

welshbyrd · 04/05/2009 14:46

afraid not treedelivery, still going

However, did have a show this morning, i had one before at 36 weeks, i know its nothing to be massively excited about, but has still given me alot of hope about normal birth.

Thank for all advise, will deffo let all know what does finally end up happeneing

welshbyrd · 04/05/2009 14:51

P.S i opted for the 9th (after being told without a doubt i will not even go @42 weeks on my own), i chose the 9th, i know i might be flamed for this, but its my daughters 11th b/day on the 13th, and really dont want to spoil her b/day every year by sharing, want her to have her special day, same as baby have her own special day of the year on her b/day

However, having thought about it now, if they do try and induce me for 3-4 days if i havent gone before then, then there is still a possibility of having c-section on the 13th anyway

OP posts:
treedelivery · 04/05/2009 14:59

No flaming here. No way. I understand that.

There is possibility of 13th, but tbh, I reckon they would ask to call it a day sooner. Or you could negotiate around it, what with 'rest days' etc. Baby permitting of course, and assuming you are not contracting.

Hawkmoth · 04/05/2009 16:53

"He stated they would try for 3-4 days of inducing me, but didnt sound hopeful, then a c-section is going to be the final outcome.

I accept if needed a c-section will be ok."

This was me on the day I was induced. My cervix was long and posterior.

I had my baby very quickly after one dose of Prostin. 2-10cm in 40 minutes once it got going. Only realised I was in labour when I started pushing... they tell you prostin pains are horrible as well!

treedelivery · 04/05/2009 17:04

If you need a section for failed induction after 3-4 days and after 3 normal deliveries I'll eat my midwifery degree.

welshbyrd · 04/05/2009 17:15

please can ya advise me treedelivery, i had a show the size of a 50p piece this morn about 11am, was clear, jelly ect.

However, just got off the toliet now, just wiped myself after having a wee,(sorry tmi i know), but i have had another bit of jelly again on the tissue, not as big as this morning, but a 20p piece size

Am i going mad, or is it possible to have 2 shows within a few hours?

And if this is normal, does it sign that baby could be somewhere close to making an appereance, without the aid of induction?

I do understand that every woman is different so dont worry if you cant really say, just this weekend because of consultant saying now way ill go before 42 weeks, without aid. I sort of put it out of my mind that it would happen on its own and that the start of anything would be on the 9th, when i go in

Theses shows have totally thrown me, and possibly got me exciting into thinking, maybe baby could be here before the 9th

OP posts:
welshbyrd · 04/05/2009 17:21

sorry bad grammar *i sort of put it out of my mind, that it WOULD"NT happen on its own

Shows are a very non-specific thing. But generally a sign that there is ripening underway. And that is good.

I had, I would say, 5 shows. Of some grim proportions, coins don't cover it. We are taking more like £5 notes here.

A good good sign, at best that your cervix is responding to and generating its own hormone responses. At worst that the consultant hit the,,,er,, nail on the head [awful thought!] with the sweep and def gave it a jolly good stimulation.

Sex sex sex. And nipple tweaking. And orgasms. All at once if you must. It is a bank holiday after all.

GaribaldiGirl · 04/05/2009 20:39

I'm convinced that usually the professionals have no idea what your body is about to do when it comes to forecasting when you'll give birth. In my experience your body can lurch into labour with little warning. With my 3rd baby I was in the hospital waiting to be induced, with an 'unripe cervix', when my labour suddenly started naturally - and went from nothing to delivery in less than an hour. I even had a junior midwife telling me I wasn't in labour because the contractions weren't strong enough. That was about 15 minutes before the head crowned.

welshbyrd · 06/05/2009 12:37

things not looking so grim today

Had midwifes appt, she decided to see if anything more had devoloped down there (TMI i know)

My cervix still high up, but she managed to get to my cervix and do a full sweep, and stretch, she did say though, cervix was still quite thick and posterior

But the fact she could feel and do the cervix sweep means things are begining to look abit more promising to last week
