i turned 29 weeks yesterday, i had my 28 week appointment on tuesday where i was measuring 35/36 weeks. this was checked twice by two different midwifes at the time. im booked in for a GTT test tomorrow and a consultant appointment and scan on tues. i had no complications in my last pregnancy and always measured pretty much spot on for dates, apart from Gestational diabetes does anyone know what else could be causing me to measure so big?? i have been looking huge for ages and people often think im almost ready to have baby. could this be nothing?? any advie greatly appreciated!

Hi I have measured 5-6 weeks above dates for both my pregnancies. I was scanned both times to check for excess fluid which was fine. I am quite small in stature and ds was a fairly good weight which we are expecting again this time (due today) and I think I just poke out more as there is not much room up and down iykwim.

are you totally totally sure of the dates - like could you have had a bleed that you thought was a period but you'd conceived before that - iyswim?

It could be polyhydramnios (excess fluid)

Ask for a scan if you are worried. Personally, I don't see what the problem can be. Gestational diabetes is not the only reason why you could have a big baby - DD was big and this baby (36 weeks now) is also big and I don't have GT.

I'm puzzled by this voodoo practice of MWs feeling around the tummy and making declarations re position & size of baby in the age of ultrasounds

I have a friend who measured huge and she had excess fluid (polyhydramnios). The baby was born normal size and at normal gestation.

lydia just thought, I don't rememebr the measurements exactly but the whole way through my last PG the MW's kept saying I was going to have a massive baby, they were even laughing and calling passing MW's into the room to have a look at how big I was ( bithces ) But they never sent me for any growth scans or anything,

When my waters broke I had this cute little bump and DD weighed 7.5lbs!.

I read an article in a magazine the other day...a woman who was PG with her 6 child was looking really big..they scanned her and daid baby was a normal size and she wascarrying a lot of water, they recommended a section...she was in hospital for some monitoring and she felt contractions start, MW examined her to find she was 7cm and no time for the section, she then gave birth to a baby that was 12lb exactly!!!!!!!!!

I'm not so sure they can be that accurate about the size of babies TBH.

hi everyone thanks for responses, hadthe test today for GD, have been feeling rotten all day and having tightenings hoping this is just the effect of too much sugar! am having a scan on tuesday and seeing a consultant, midwife said this was the only way of being able to tell what exactly was going on in there with regards to babies size! saying that i measured spot on for last pregnancy, had to have a scan at 38 weeks where was told baby was going to be at least 8 lbs, dd was 6lb 13oz! i think my main worry is being at the birthing unit unable to push out a 13lb baby!
