Shower shame

... not weeing in the shower, it's sometimes the only option when pregnant

My secret shame is... I keep drinking the water from the shower head.

I know this is weird... but how unhealthy is it? My mum always used to tell me how dirty hot water is, but I can't figure out why... it all has Chlorine in after all.

I'm sure it's fine. Can you not have a glass or bottle of water when in the shower, or is it the taste of the hot water that you like?

morningpaper · 30/04/2009 19:20

What sort of boiler do you have?

Hawkmoth · 30/04/2009 19:20

It's the taste! I stand there gulping it like some terribly odd fish.

Combi boiler.

Fine, I think it's a slight risk with water from ancient storage tanks.

morningpaper · 30/04/2009 19:22

yes you are quite safe with a combi boiler

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 30/04/2009 19:22

pmsl at 'terribly odd fish'

If your hot water comes from a tank in your loft then there could be a dead rat in there like my neighbours found out when they changed their system. We had loads of dead wasps in ours.
We had our boiler replaced and now the hot and cold come from the same place so we could drink from the showerhead if we really wanted to.

TrillianAstra · 30/04/2009 19:24

If you have a combi boiler the hot water is only marginally older than the cold, and has been kept in a sealed-ish place, so nothing to worry about.

Why do ancient loft storage tanks not have lids on them, BTW?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 30/04/2009 19:26

Trillian, hmm, maybe because they would explode with the steam? Though they could have a colander style lid.

nickytwotimes · 30/04/2009 19:26

It's not really good for drinking, though tbh I doubt it would do any harm.
SHowers need to be run for a few seconds before use to clear bacteria which love to live in shower heads. This always happens becasue you need to heat them up anyway, so no worries there. Also, they need to be kept very very clean as they are great mould breeders.
The issue is more with the heating of the water. If it is an electric shower, then the coils will potentially 'contaminate' the water. If it is from gas, then the combi boiler/storage tank will contaminate it too. If your house has an overhead water storage system, then trust me, you wouldn't want to drink that supply either! I am using contaminate in a fairly loose sense here btw.

I wouldn't recommend drinking it though. As I say, probably be fine, but if you saw what he water passes through, you would baulk.

Ivykaty44 · 30/04/2009 19:30

I sed to love the taste of the water in the bathroom when I lived at family home - it tastes different from downstairs and can relate to the fish gulping

Hawkmoth · 30/04/2009 23:06

Could be a worse craving. At least it's not mucky bathwater. Only 15 weeks to go.

A combi boiler uses water from the mains, does it not? Therefore you should be fine! (Just a bit of limescale coming through the pipes/showerhead, which is probably giving you some extra calcium somewhere along the way)

Hawkmoth · 30/04/2009 23:53

Limescale? You calling me a southerner??????

OP posts:
BecauseIveSnuffedIt · 01/05/2009 00:11

Excuse me. I am a good Northerner. I wouldn't even consider it.

fortyplus · 01/05/2009 00:14

One of my friends had a craving for nibbling loofahs. And they couldn't be new ones - she had to have used them for a while so they were all soft and full of old skin cells and soap scum! She used to take a bit to work every day to nibble!

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 01/05/2009 00:19

Is it from an electric shower? Electric showers should have a mains water supply, so that is safe to drink. I wouldn't drink it from tanked water...had a dead and maggoty bird in mine once.

YanknCock · 01/05/2009 00:55

Would it make you feel any less shamed if I confessed to throwing up in my shower about three times a week until recently? Had to rinse my mouth with something, so I was drinking shower water too!

Haha! This thread made me chuckle. As for peeing in the shower - I'll admit to doing that occasionally, when my nether regions have been so engorged and painful, the thought of wiping after urinating has been too much - sometimes I'll just wait and do it in the shower. Don't tell anyone.

Hawkmoth · 03/05/2009 18:00

Fresh loofah or one with lots of tasty bacteria in it??? Natural loofah, I presume!

OP posts:
fortyplus · 05/05/2009 16:41

Yes it was natural loofah but she said it didn't do it for her if it was a new one - it had to be really well used!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 26/11/2009 10:09

Ick, I read something recently about all the nasty bugs that grow in showerheads so no way I would want to do that!

woowa · 26/11/2009 14:19

I clean my teeth in the shower as a time-saving exercise . Plus it's nicer doing it in warm water.

Am fully expecting to have to wee in the shower post childbirth. I see no shame in that.
