When my baby is born i intend to breast feed, but should i buy some formula milk just incase theres a problem?

What brand should i get? Or should i just wait and see.

But, it's worth bearing in mind that there are sometimes problems with Mums or babies that perseverance can't cure. My friend's DD ended up seriously dehydrated and in hospital because the quality of her milk wasn't up to scratch. I suspect if she'd had formula to try or fall back on and had tried it she may have had a much easier time. I would say even if you don't have formula buy at least one bottle with a newborn teat and a microwave steriliser bag just in case you need to express. Some babies just can't latch on to the breast.

I had a couple of cartons in the cupboard, and one bottle/teat. I got a microwave steriliser, but knew I'd use that for other things (breast pump parts etc)...

I spent about 6 weeks saying to myself "just get through the next feed and if it's not working there's always the formula"... think it was 6 weeks I stopped thinking like that.Somewhere between 6 weeks and 13 months

I will be doing the same again. The feeling that I had absolutely no choice was my biggest problem, and that is to do with my psychology, not anyone else's.

I also got my list of help lines etc all sorted before teh birth, which were very helpful, so I was motivated to bf btw.
good luck with it all.

I would buy a couple of cartons to leave in your cupboard - dont buy powder just yet as once opened it doesnt last that long. I used Aptimil only because a friend reccomended it, but it is harder to find in smaller shops than sma and cow & gate.

There are lots of conflicting dos and donts about bf, but I eventually did both - you just have to remember that if you give formula, your body will produce that amount less each time - I didnt realise this until I was having trouble BF and spoke to a friend about it. I then expressed to make up each formula/bottle feed and that seemed to give DS the supply he needed.

I eventually BF for 6 months but i wasnt prepared for how difficult it is in the early days - dont want to scare you, I just wished I had been more prepared. Also buy yourself some Lansinoh cream to put in your hospital bag.
