Thanks Christiana, I think i'll pop down to the pharmacy and make sure it is a cold sore and see what they say. I've put a bit of blisteze on it this morning but they may be able to give us something else.

Hi

Just thought I would add- your baby is very very very unlikely to catch any coldsore from yourself as long as you have had the virus before. If you have, your body will have passed on an immunity to the virus to your baby which will last for about 3 months after the baby is born, and maybe longer if you breastfeed. When to worry is if you contract the virus for the FIRST time during pregnancy, as your body has had no previous exposure to the virus and therefore, no immunity can be passed to your baby. Also, the same applies if your baby comes into contact with the virus when they are very young (i.e. newborn) and you have never had the virsu before- for the same reason, the baby will have no immunity, and their own immune system is too immature to cope with it. Thirdly, if you have your baby early, this would be another worry as the baby gets most of your immunity to certain viruses etc in the third trimester, so therefore, if the pregnancy does not get to this stage, the baby may not have built up their immunity from yourself.

Hope this isn't too garbled!! Just that with the recent stories in the press with babies dying from a coldsore etc etc, some of the information out there at the moment isn't 100% correct. Regarding the most recent press story where a baby sadly died from the virus- the mother had unfortunatly contracted the virus for the very first time, and therefore, the baby had no immunity.

Hope this helps and reassures you x
