Hi im going for a scan tomorrow because the sonographer could not find the babys nasal bone, she said that i would also be offered a transvaginal scan while im there. Has anyone here had a transvaginal scan and if so how was it performed and is there any risk involved? Not sure why they offer this scan either and will ask tomorrow when i go but thought id post here to see if anyone knew any thing about them, thanks

Hi Loganberry,

I've had several transvaginal scans (I'm 22 weeks too).

It's similar to a smear test. I had to take my pants off, and put my legs up a little bit. Then the nurse inserted a sort of probe thing - not big or scary though.

It's a bit undignified but not so bad really!

I definitely doesn't hurt and isn't dangerous in any way for you or the baby. Very occasionally I've heard people getting a little bit of bleeding afterwards, but I think this mainly concerns early pregnancy, when there's still remains of period blood and the cervix is very engorged, etc.

WIshing you lots of luck tomorrow, hope everything goes just perfectly for you.

Def way better than a smear test, doesn't hurt. small probe thing (think (ahem) adult toy....) At my doctors they put a condom on the end of it. Bit late for that, I thought.......

MrsHappy · 28/04/2009 16:50

I've had 6 or so.

There is no risk as far as I know.
The probe looks a little alarming, but they put a condom on it and a load of lube and then they insert just the tip into your vagina. I find it helps to breathe out when they insert the probe. It does not hurt and I would say is far more comfortable than a smear.

The only time I have had any pain from these scans has been when they pushed on my tum to try to get a view of one of my ovaries (it sits behind a load of bowel). Anyway they won't be doing that to you because they are looking for something different.

The view on a TV scan tends to be better, (especially in eary pregnancy) than a TA scan. Not sure if that is why they might do one on you but it seems plausible.

Lots of luck - I am sure the thought of these things is worse than the reality.

I don't know why they might be offering you one - I had one as part of my 20 week scan as the Dr wanted to check that my cervix was closed tightly, as I've a history of premature delivery. (It was, so was very reassuring.)

I also had one in early pregnancy with 1st child, can't remember why...!

I echo others; was totally pain free, not even uncomfortable, they only put the tip of the probe in, it doesn't butt up on your cervix or anything.

MrsTittleMouse · 28/04/2009 17:04

I'd had two. I know someone who found it very undignified, but it didn't bother me at all. It was way better than a smear test! No speculum, no scraping, no problem.

loganberry12 · 28/04/2009 17:27

i think they are just offering it as at the moment kings college are down doing research, its opional, i think i'll see how i feel tomorrow to weather i have it or not.was told they can tell if your prone to early labour or preclamsia i think.

thankyou for this thread, i am having one soon (for early pg) and was a bit worried.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 28/04/2009 17:33

agree with the others, it's not much fun but is way better than a smear - partly cos it's done under the cover of the darkness of the scan room I think! Also you're covered by a sheet so ok really.

giveusabreak · 28/04/2009 17:57

i had loads with ivf and they were fine. I used to post on an infertility forum (lots of laughs there you can imagine ) and one poster used to call it the doo-dah up the hoo hah .

giveusabreak · 28/04/2009 17:58

forgot to say - hope all goes well

I have had more than I can count as I lived in Germany and had a couple of m/c before having DD so I was classed as high risk and scanned at every appointment. They generally do these scans until the baby grows to big as the scan is much more detailed and exact.

It does not hurt, just feels a bit undignified.

Good luck.

MrsHappy · 28/04/2009 19:38

True about the darkness and the sheet, Hangingbellyofbabylon, although my sheet once fell off just as a second consultant came in for a look.

Loganberry, I'm booked at Kings as well and had the TV scan at 22 weeks along with the standard anomaly scan. You're right, it's because they're doing research into the risk of pre-term delivery and pre-eclampsia and/or IUGR - they'll do some measurements and give you a %age likelihood of either happening. It won't take long and my sonographer talked me through it all as she went - it was quite interesting!

mrswee · 29/04/2009 09:26

Hi Loganberry

I had a TV scan when I was maybe 1-2 weeks pregnant (just over 3 if you take for almost day of period)

They did it to look in to possibly fertility problems - to have a quick look at my womb and at my ovaries, it was very interesting and there was no way of telling I was pregnant then - but the doctor said at the time 'oh that seems to be looking very healthy and doing as it should' when she saw my right ovary! it was all fanned out and looked amazing, like a sea creature! so I guess thats the direction this baby came from! The left one didn't seem to be doing much.

I agree it is nothing to worry about, not sore just feels slightly undignified depending on how you are about these things! and is pretty interesting.

good luck with everything and I guess just see how you feel at the time

Ninjacat · 29/04/2009 09:35

I've had my fair share. As everyone else says realy, nothing to worry about.
A friend of mine describes it as "like sitting on a gear stick"
