Average stay in hospital after successful VBAC delivery

Having read some VBAC links that other mumsnetters have kindly posted I read on one that one of the benefits of VBAC is you stay in hospital one day less than a c section.

Is there a difference in the amount of time most hospitals want you to stay in after a VBAC than a normal delivery? After my DS2 was born I was home within 4 hours. Is that not the same after a successful VABC?

I stayed 1 night.

With my sections stayed in about 3, 4 and 7 nights. My VBAC was after 1 section. Was amazing, I really felt elated after! Even with a severe tear the recovery was far easier than CS! Good luck!

that's good to know. I stayed 3 nights after by ELCS, so 1 night would be a significant improvement!

With DS1 (emergency c-section) I was in for 10 days, but mainly due to pre-eclampsia.

But DS2 and DD (both VBAC) arrived in the morning, and I went home after lunch.

thanks brilliant news Chippy

You can go hone when you feel ready Heinz. Obviously I would take the views of the hospital staff on board, but if you feel ready to go, then there is no harm in asking if you can.

I was in 24 hours after VBAC with DD2, only because the first time I stood up, my BP dropped and I felt dizzy - otherwise, they would have let me go home after 8 hours.

VBAC with DD3, in for 5 days as she had severe jaundice - from my POV, could have gone home after 24 hours again (epidurals do funny things to my BP)

I stayed 1 night but 2 days after Em-cs no. 2.

ShowOfHands · 28/04/2009 12:21

I stayed in 1 night after an emcs, so if I have a VBAC would I be discharged before the baby came?

tiggerlovestobounce · 28/04/2009 12:24

Do you mean a home birth?

robino · 28/04/2009 12:28

I got "ultra-early discharge" after my VBAC - home in 4 hours! Was fab!

Luxmum · 28/04/2009 13:15

ohhh... shudder.... home within 4 hours?? I was in hospital for 4 days, and that was great (well, except for having to share a room with a new mum with 20 million relations, all trooping in to look at her baby). I needed those days to do nothing except lie on the hospital bed, and have my dinners brought to me. I'm counting on having 4 more days for DC3... well, I hope so anyway.

I had a VBAC, Son was delivered 12:13pm had an episiotomy & went home 4pm. hopefully will be home quite quickly with this one, 11 weeks to go

Poledra · 28/04/2009 16:48

Cor Luxmum, you weren't in the NHS, were you??. 6-bed bay in a ward, hardly enough space to get the little fish-tank cot thing up the side of the bed, and most definitely kicked out of bed ASAP to get moving to help recovery (so they said.....)

Allie79 · 03/05/2009 00:33

Delivered 11.35 pm Monday VBAC with forceps, tear and PPH, kicked out at 9.30am Wednesday morning, had to wait over an hour and a half in the waiting room with my little girl before my friend could come and pick me up as we'd been told I wasn't being discharged till late afternoon and my husband had gone to a morning meeting. Needed the bed...Aaah the NHS.... As for luxmum - I wish, one of my worst experiences was my firstborn screaming for 40 min when I'd been brought back to the postnatal ward before a nurse finally showed up to lift her over to me (C-section, couldn't reach plus still catheterised) for a feed/ cuddle. I couldn't wait to get out of hospital just so I had some help if nothing else!

LackaDAISYcal · 03/05/2009 00:37

After my VBA2C I was in for three nights, but mainly because of problems with DS rather than with me. If he hadn't needed a bit of help breathing and low blood sugar then I would have been home later the same day (he was born in the wee small hours)
