Hey girls,
So the title says it all really & i know its probably been done 100 times over.
I am 21 weeks pregnant and next weekend plan on doing my first shop!(So excited!)
Now apart for the buggy, cot/crib which are already sorted, I need a general list of things to buy.
I dont really want to buy everything in one go & also people may start to buy me things nearer the time, but I was just wanting a gerneral list to get me going, i.e. sterealizer, breast pump, a few baby grows, some bedding etc.
Any help or suggestions on things you bought that were handy will be so much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

WRT clothes, you will be deluged with stuff (I gout about 5 lots of babywear from different people) - because babies grow so fast that baby clothes rarely get worn out. Also, it's worth looking in charity shops for baby clothes if you don't get senough tuff from friends. DOn't go overboard with fancy bedding as you will be washing it a lot.
Also (this is something a friend of mine passed on to me) when you do the first shop, look out for a teddy or other toy as a special gift for the baby when s/he comes, because it's nice to feel you are buying him/her a present as well as practical things.

greatwhiteshark · 27/04/2009 09:12

Don't bother with things you may not need - it's very difficult to resist, but you will save a fortune in money and can go out and get most baby stuff very easily at random times of day too nowadays!

Def. don't bother with bfing paraphernalia except for bras later on - get things when you need them. Bath in a plastic box, or big bath with you, or sink - don't waste money on a baby bath.

Do get a good baby carrier from somewhere like here.

thisisyesterday · 27/04/2009 09:22

agree with greatwhite, although it's very tempting to buy everything it's likely that you won't use the majority of the stuff the shops make you think you'll need!

i would have maybe a few babygros, vests, cardigans, hats, socks and mittens
some blankets

bedding-wise we used sheets and blankets, but I Know a lot of people use those grobags. I think we had maybe 6 sheets, and about 8 blankets

muslins, they're useful to fold in half and tuck around the crib mattress or in the pram in case baby is sick, means you don' thave to change the whole sheet, just the muslin. and of course to use as bibs, when winding, general wiping up of puke and stuff!

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 27/04/2009 09:22

People do buy you lots of clothes but they tend to buy larger sizes than newborn so that they last longer. So i would buy half a dozen newborn size babygrows and vests. Mothercare and m&s do good ones.

bubblagirl · 27/04/2009 09:23

when my ds was born we had so many toiletries his 4 and were still using them so maybe dont buy any

we had drawers full of clothes he lived in babygros for the first few months

didnt really need so much just sheets , small blankets, vests babygros,

in all honesty i think people tend to stock right up with loads of clothes etc i would say to people can they buy clothes from 6 months as baby gros were more convenient till then

not much was really needed up until then lived in babygros slept in moses basket went out in stroller sterilized bottles that was really it

Comewhinewithme · 27/04/2009 09:25

Muslin squares --- Use for everything burping cloth, bib ,flannel (and reuse as dishcloths when baby no longer uses them)

If you are not fussy look on ebay for newborn bundles I have been doing this since about 20 weeks (am 35 weeks now) and have got loads of bits and bobs. Ditto for newborn socks you can never have too many and theya re always getting lost.

Knotty hat --Baby will need a hat when it is first born .

Vests .

Don't bother with baby bath they are a PITA but top n tail bowls are useful.

Bedding for moses basket /cot.

Pram blanket.

Jacket/snowsuit.

Couple of cardigans.

Scratch mits .

Baby bath stuff asda are doing the johnsons box for 20.00 on their direct site .

Changing mat or use a towel .

Few packs of nappies unless you are using real ones.

Cotton wool.

HTH

bubblagirl · 27/04/2009 09:25

if your doing baby bag for hospital you will need cotton wool plenty of nappies as the first few are awful lol

vests and babygros

dont over stock the size 1 nappies either as they grow so quick just get few packs in first

bubblagirl · 27/04/2009 09:26

i have to add we bought scratch mits and they were useless on ds newborn socks worked a treat they actually stayed on lol

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 27/04/2009 09:28

I'd recommend loads of muslins - useful for everything really. Impromptu blanket, mopping up sick, emergency breast pads etc etc! I wouldn't bother with a steraliser unless you think you'll be bottle feeding from day one. If you do find you need anything like that desperately you can always pick up things at tesco or something. I treated myself to a lovely shawl/receiving blanket from M&S - it was so soft and and snuggly and made me feel like a real mummy . Enjoy your shopping, it's such an exciting time and with your first you have a good excuse to buy stuff, I'm pregnant with my 3rd and trying to justify buying anything at all.

MmeLindt · 27/04/2009 09:29

I would not buy BF stuff until you see if you need them. I sold my breast pump unused as I never used it.

I would go for a packet of the microwave steriliser bags to begin with and only buy a steriliser if you FF.

We used a Grobag which I found much better than sheets as they get kicked off.

We got loads of baby clothes, mainly in 3-6 months so get a couple of new born sleepsuits and bodies/vests and maybe one or two outfits to begin with.

I had so many clothes, some of them duplicate that I exchanged some for bigger sizes.

mumtobe23 · 27/04/2009 10:26

Wow thanks so much for all your advice, I really am grateful!

yes, i'm 25 weeks pg and a few weeks ago I was so tempted to go out a buy stuff. Might have been the boredom. I ended up going to boot sale and buying a baby changing station for £5 which I thought wasn't that expensive, and the following week I got the pram cheap. Then my cousin popped in and has given me loads of stuff from her daughters baby, including steriliser, bottles etc., loads of clothes. Have been given a cot too. So now I'm just going to wait and buy when necessary .

xx

Ohforfoxsake · 27/04/2009 13:16

Join Freecycle for some bits. I've given away both my slings, sterilser, cot matress and various other bits. All in very good nick.

BlackLetterDay · 27/04/2009 13:22

The babygrows from next are good, they have little built in scratch mitts that just fold over, wash well too.

Forester · 29/04/2009 13:52

I'm also a first timer and posted a similar request a couple of weeks ago - so you may find this thread helpful.

car seat- maxi cosi is the best
from birth buggy- maclaren if you live in city, nipper 360 if you live in country
grobag sleeping bags
9 x short sleeved vests
9 x baby gros
travel cot with bassinet bit to use for newborn's irst few months in your room, then as playpen, and to sleep in when you are away
second hand swing/ playmat/ baby bath
baby carrier or sling

alana39 · 29/04/2009 17:55

The best thing we were bought was a grobag. Ended up with a couple at each size stage so there was a warm one and a cooler one (who knows what you'll need when in this country). Then you just need fitted sheets for the crib / cot and there's no way they can kick off covers.

Loads of muslins.

YesSirICanBoogie · 29/04/2009 20:38

Totally agree about the Grobag. They're fab!
Also -
100% cotton sheets
100% cotton bodysuits x6
100% cotton sleepsuits x6
socks
Blankets x 2
hat
cardigan/snowsuit
muslins
Cotbed (most useful IMO)
Car Seat
From birth buggy or pram
Newborn nappies, wipes/cotton wool, cream, toiletries
little nail clippers
Clothes (If you like but you'll get masses)
Sterliser and bottles if you need them.

Not essential but I swore by -
Little deck chair bath seat
Tiny Love Symphony in Motion mobile
Baby Bjorn bouncy chair

I never used -
Moses basket
Sling/papoose
bath
scratch mits

YesSirICanBoogie · 29/04/2009 20:41

Also, I'd get a changing table and mat.

TamTam29 · 29/04/2009 20:58

The best thing we had in the early days were nighties - long old fashioned night dresses with an open bottom, they are hard to find but I know mothercare and john lewis have them at the mo - great lifesaver when having to do nappy changes in the night - no faffing with hundreds of stupid poppers in a dimly lit room!

we used sheets & blankets whilst baby still in his crib, grobag when he moved into cotbed. (look around as in matalan and supermarkets they are a fraction of the price of the branded ones) We put the baby in a moses basket during day and crib at night but as long as they have a change of scene it doesnt matter. We were lucky as we were given a mosese basket as DS was so big he outgrow it by 8 weeks!

I took lots of the clothes we were given as presents back and exchanged them for 6-9 and 9-12 months as we had been handed down loads of smaller stuff.

If you plan to breast feed then just a couple of small bottles in case it doesnt go to plan and I would hold off from buying a steriliser as we just used large tupperware box and some milton for first few weeks. I would also second putting off buying a pump until you are comfortable BF. And we used small tupperware to "top and tail" & for changing in the early days.

Dont go mad on your buggy/pram, My son is 20 months and ALL of the mums from my antenatal classes now have 2 prams/buggys or just a maclaren type buggy. If your baby is due soon, you may get away with only needing a lay flat buggy rather than a big old pram that you will be fed up with in 6 months time!

Only buy a couple of those hooded towels as they outgrow them so quick! although I love my cuddlerobe - very expensive but the best thing we biought & we still use it daily!

We have always bathed DS in our bath, DH used to get in and hold him when very tiny. and we too have a cupboard full of baby toiletries as DS is allergic to most of them!

Also I would recomend a play gym - one with bits that you can adjust - buy second hand if you can. And if you buy a bouncy chair, then I reccomend the fisherprice one that goes from birth to toddler - my DS still loves sitting in his. As they start sitting, those rubber ring things are great too as they allow little one to sit up with support.

We had a bumbo which DS hated! I passed it on to a friend whose little one loved it. So if tempted buy second hand.

The other thing parents to be always forget (as its not needed straight away) is a highchair - if any one offers/requests to buy you something, i would suggest that.

Ds wouldnt wear scratchmits - still wont wear gloves! but we used Next sleep suits as they had flaps that you could fold over their hands.

Dont buy too many size 1 &2 nappies as we had LOADS left over! (DS was a big baby that grew very quickly!)

I also loved my baby bjorn sling but depends on size of baby. I stopped using it by 20 weeks but my SIL used it before me with her preemie till she was nearly a year old!

Still too scared to use nail clippers (am very heavy handed) so bite DS nails although his dad has just started clipping them.

something for in the night that plays music ifor settling baby, DS has a teddy that you pull a string - much easier than winding up a mobile numerous times!

I am carboot and ebay queen and also check on the NCT website for nearly new sales in my area regularily. I rarely buy anything brand new unless I have too! Most baby stuff is used so little that it is easy to find 2nd hand in near perfect condition.
