Im 22 weeks today and have been experiencing Braxton Hicks on and off for a few weeks now. Had them quite a bit a week ago then nothing till today and been having them most of the day. I cant remember having them this early in my other pregnancies is this normal?

I think they started at about 20 weeks with my first pregnancy. This time I started getting them a lot earlier, maybe at about 15 weeks?

I have had a lot of stress and pressure during both pregnancies so I can't be sure my experience is normal...

Hopefully someone more helpful will be along soon

I had them from about 16 weeks a few times a week.

Picante · 25/04/2009 19:30

Having them from around 15 weeks and they are now fairly frequent - now 23 weeks. Probably all the raspberry leaf tea I'm drinking!

I never had any in my 1st pg. I'm 28+1 in this pg and still haven't felt any.

Hawkmoth · 25/04/2009 19:33

10ish weeks this time, and now at 24 weeks get a good few every day.

Much more painful/uncomfortable than the first time round.

shellmc · 25/04/2009 19:34

Hiya this is my first baby, i first felt them at 25+ weeks and then nothing, im now 36 weeks and started feeling them again ova past week o so xxx

M78 · 25/04/2009 19:56

I am 18 weeks and for the last couple of days I have had them quite often, I can't remeber having them this early in my previous pregnancy

thisisyesterday · 25/04/2009 20:02

1st pg- about 30 weeks
2nd pg- can't remember but do remember thinking it was earlier
3rd pg- about 16 weeks!

apparently it's common to get them a lot earlier with subsequent babies and it's a sign that your body is preparing for childbirth

madmissy · 25/04/2009 20:40

1st pg 16 weeks!!
2nd pg 22 weeks

3rd to early

MrsMattie · 25/04/2009 20:41

1st pregnancy - didn't have them

2nd pregnancy - 22 weeks-ish, maybe slightly earlier. Were so intense until about 30 weeks and then almost disappeared.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/04/2009 20:42

The morning I woke up in labour!

Wilkiepedia · 25/04/2009 20:43

Picante - I am pretty sure Raspberry Leaf tea shouldn't be drunk until well into third trimester (risk of prem birth) - double check with MW though.

1st pg - third trimester got them
This pg - from about 26 weeks

Salleroo · 25/04/2009 21:31

Can someone describe them for me, as i dont know if it is just the baby expanding or bh?

Wilkiepedia · 25/04/2009 21:36

Salleroo - have actually only recently twigged that they are BHs (and second time mother too!!) - for me they feel as though baby has stretched out as far as possible, really really tight, taut tummy that seems to peak after about 30 seconds, makes me feel breathless and then relaxes again. No pain just a weird breathless tight feeling.

Salleroo · 25/04/2009 21:59

Second preg here too and have had wierd stretching, not to the point of breathlessness, just a bit uncomfortable. Not sure what they are, they last on and off for a couple of days, go, then come back again.

I wouldnt mind but I asked my consultant the other day and he asked if it goes away, I said it did, he said dont worry so. Doesnt really inspire confidence does he.

I'll pay more attention from now on, started at about 30 weeks, now 34. Dont think it happened at all last time.

I always laughed at the 'you'll forget it all comments' - how true they were. I cant compare this preg to the last one at all as I barely remember apart from the groundhog days going 12 over.

doulalc · 25/04/2009 22:06

If it feels like your belly is getting hard and tight, press on it. If it is hard all over, it is likely a contraction. If hard in one area, but soft elsewhere, it is probaby baby's bum or back pressing against you.

Your uterus contracts throughout most of pregnancy, but you just don't feel it early on. Some women never notice braxton hicks contractions, even when they show up on a monitor. You may notice them more if you are not taking in enough fluids. Being a bit dehydrated can cause the uterus to contract more so making sure you are drinking enough may help them to subside.

Picante · 26/04/2009 09:27

Wilkie yes I know that is what people say, but I trust my herbalist. I took it from 31 weeks with ds, and although I went 10 days overdue, my contractions apparently were strong and my uterus contracted well afterwards.

My herbalist says it's safe to take from very early on in pregnancy - I've taken it from 20 weeks - as a tea not capsules. She says it does not cause premature labour, it just aids contractions when the body is ready to go into labour. Hope that makes sense.

I think it's definitely been causing my braxton hicks - in a way I see that as training!

1st preg - about 17 weeks, they were v. uncomfortable by the end
This preg am 18 weeks and nothing yet
