Hi

Anyone know of an EPU in Herts that accepts self-referrals - nearest to me are Welwyn Garden City and Watford ?

Also, what is the likelihood of seesing something with an internal scan at 5+4 ?? I'm bleeding a bit - not convinced yet that is an MC - holding out a bit of hope and can't get a GP appt before tomorrow evening ...

if u are keen to be seen within the Nhs most hospitals have an Epu service weekday mornings. Most such units allow Pts to self refer. At 5+ wks it is not always possible to always see a fetal heartbeat to confirm viability(50% cases).Hope that helps.

I don't know of any locally that do self-referral. Unlikely to see anything remotely helpful before 6-7 weeks.

Sorry.

If u want to have a private scan then try ringing your local private hospital who will be able to help (typical costs should be in the £150 to £200 range).

Watford told me they see you in Gynae Emergency rather than EPU - either by GP referral or A&E. a&E quicker but will involve a wait.

biggernow · 23/04/2009 19:36

don't know about your area, but know your Doc will refer you to EPU if you have a bleed- I did at same time as you- went for scan- they could see a sac and healthy reaction around it and they could see patch of bleeding away from sac- and HCG bloods were rising (my doc is nice and only took for her records and for some comfort) so they felt comfortable- and 2 weeks later I went back (agonising 2 weeks) and they could see embryo and heartbeat.

you could just call your nearest and cry LOADS and beg for help??

be firm and get scanned and good luck. remember bleeding is not always bad.

Might be worth calling Luton & Dunstable. They have an EPU and I'm pretty sure a friend of mine self-referred (although she lived locally - does that make a difference?).

Watford epu won't scan before 6 weeks (according to my gp) gynae emergency wasn't much help either tbh, they don't do scans there as far as I can tell, just refer to epu.

Thanks everyone. I experienced gynae emergency at Watford last time I didn't actually know till today that there is an EPU at Hemel - a lot easier to get to. I still have nightmares about spending an hour in the back of a car trying to get to Watford General in Nov and making a bit of a mess of the back seat

This time, I have found a new GP at my surgery who is lovely and has managed to get me an appt for a scan at Hemel tomorrow - she had to move my LMP date to get them to accept it ! (my last AF started at 10pm one evening, so I took the next day as CD1 - she just moved it back !)

Am under no illusions and am not expecting to see anything - have had what looks like light-medium AF all day with a swollen, very achey abdomen and backache - worse than usual AF pains.

At least this lovely new GP added in details of a CP last July to my records, which means once this MC is confirmed, I at least get referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic .. It also means that I'll have an answer and some closure before I take DP off on hols for his birthday treat on Monday - and maybe I can have a drink or three.

Best of luck for tomorrow jools, though I sadly agree that it doesn't sound good.

Hope it doesn't spoil your holiday too much.

arena · 24/04/2009 12:11

Hope everything is ok.

Joolsiam · 24/04/2009 12:46

As expected, complete MC - better now than later I suppose. Don't feel too bad about it at the mo, especially now the pain has stopped. I was so terrified of MC'ing again at around 12 weeks, I'm just relieved that, if it had to happen, it happened before I started building a future in my head and before the hormones started building me up for a big crash.

I don't recommend Hemel EPU though - it may be deserted but the sonographer was brusque, bordering on rude. To get any information whatsoever, I had to open up the sealed report she'd given me to pass to the GP - the report mentioned that there was no EPU nurse available, so I presume it is better usually.

Sad
CantSleepWontSleep · 24/04/2009 19:56

Very sorry jools.

I've always been pretty happy with the Lister in Stevenage for future reference (1 mc and 2 babies there).

madmissy · 24/04/2009 20:32
