Peanuts in pregnancy and childhood exzema

rubyslippers · 21/04/2009 12:59

During my first PG i was advised to not eat peanuts (no history of allergies or exzema)

This time, guidance seems to have changed, and i have eaten peanut butter etc

Is there a link to eating peanuts and allergies etc?

It is just that DS, who is 2.9 has suddenly flared up with exzema, so am now wondering if there is an issue

Anyone got any links or experiences

The research now is looking at whether this ban on peanuts has actually caused more allergies/eczema than it prevented!

I know nothing about this.
All I can give you is my experience: I have eaten peanuts throughout both my pregnancies as the peanut-ban somehow slipped through the millions of other so I was oblivious to it.
No exzema or allergies here, so far.

I ate peanuts during both my pregnancies must to the horror of my SIL but as neither me nor DH had allergies I presumed it was fine. Anyway the upshot was that dd (2.8) is completely fine while ds (1.3) has eczema and a nut allergy. No idea if me eating peanuts while pregnant had anything to do with it but next time will probably leave them out!

thanks for the input

Left them out last pregnancy (shame as all I wanted to eat was Peanut butter and snickers!) but have family history of eczema. Dd 1 still diagnosed with eczema at a few weeks old! Have avoided this pregnancy too so will see how these two fare - can't wait to get my hands on a Snickers though...

I have deliberately eaten peanuts on this pregnancy figuring it was like immunisation
so just every now and then building up a little each time. giving baby a chance to build an immunity to them. did similar on first and despite dh's family being riddled with allergies not sign yet in dd (3.6)

rubyslippers · 22/04/2009 10:38

it seems there is no right or wrong then!

poor you - craving snickers! It will taste like nectar when you finally get to eat one

eaten peanuts through 3 pgs. one dc had mild childhood exczema which has now cleared.

naomi83 · 22/04/2009 19:40

great article DS had this Israeli peanut snack at 9 months, despite family history of ashma and allergies, no peanut allergy in sight-hooray!

happyflower · 23/04/2009 16:54

I ate peanuts and peanut butter throughout my first pregnancy (and I had eczema as a child and my brother has asthma). I'm with the immunity theory (just think of all those women in Africa/India where peanuts grow - I bet they don't avoid them and I don't think there are a lot of peanut allergies going around there. (that's my rationale anyway!).

I did make sure I breastfed for a year since I heard this was supposed to be good for eczema, and my dd has never suffered from it (5 yrs old now).

iris66 · 23/04/2009 17:03

I was told about the research by DS1's consultant and it makes absolute sense that exposure in the womb & in breast milk desensitises. However, I'm unconvinced since I ate loads of (veggie) sushi and hummous whilst pg & bf DS1 and he still went on to develop an anaphylactic allergy to sesame - though his skin prick test result has lessened over the past year confusing

SallyJayGorce · 23/04/2009 17:04

I avoided them because my brother has loads of allergies including peanuts but now advice has changed and they advise you do eat them.

I worried a lot about ff my three because of family allergy history on both sides but DCs have no allergies or eczema at all - first generation not to have any so if bf cocks up again if we have a fourth I won't be so bothered. All the kids I know with eczema were bf - including me and my brother so who knows?

A friend of mine has a DS who has a nut allergy. She told me that the latest advice she had been given was that it may well have been the eczema cream they used to cover him with twice a day as a baby / toddler that caused the nut allergy in the first place. Not sure why, presumably one the ingredients in the cream caused the sensitivity.

Current research shows no link to eating peanuts in pg and the baby having peanut allergy.
