Post champagne regret...

Hello all,

After some reassurance....

I'm 26 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I've been avoiding alcohol, but having perhaps half a glass of wine a week since 12 weeks, which I felt happy about, and didn't seem to disagree with me.

Last month I had half a small glass of champagne for my wedding anniversary. Woke up next morning feeling slightly nauseous. Didn't really know if there was any connection between the two but have pretty much stopped having the half glass as a result.

It was my birthday last night. Had a massive Chinese meal, followed by banana fritters - and a glass of champagne. Woke up in the night feeling nauseous, heartburn, and slightly head-spinny and heart beating fast.

I'm not going to have any more drinks in this pregnancy as the panic alone is bad enough, let alone the nausea. But I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on whether if the alcohol (and it seems to be champagne) has obviously disagreed with me, then it is more likely to have done some harm to my baby? In other words - is the post-alcohol nausea a particularly bad sign, or just bad luck?

Many thanks....

I should add a hello to everyone, really [waves]. I've been lurking on the pregnancy pages for 22 weeks now. Had miscarriage at 6 weeks before, and oddly have been too nervous to post.

Sorry that my first post here is a bit of a worried one!

One glass won't do the baby any harm, but obviously doesn't agree with you! Mind you if you a large meal {some yummy} it could equally be that that's made you feel a bit queasy.

Chinese made me feel very queasy when pregnant. The salt content gave me a headache aswell, More likely to be the food.

Heartburn is pretty common in pregnancy and any kind of fizzy drink will make it worse. It might well be that you would feel as bad after a glass of Coke. Plus a giant Chinese meal will not be helping. One glass of champagne will not be harming your baby, just making you feel dreadful.

Please don't worry.

I got engaged and married whilst pregnancy so I had a couple of glasses of champagne during the 9 months. The amount you have had won't hurt the baby it's just disagreed with you (along with the huge chinese meal!) Don't worry.

If anything it's likely to be all the fat in the Chinese that caused the heartburn and nausea.

One glass of champagne shouldn't make you feel that bad physically.

However, if it's making you feel so bad psychologically then stop drinking it.

Thank you so so much everyone for replying to me so swiftly [tries to locate grateful smiley emoticon]. Am trying to do some fairly urgent work this morning but was simply beating myself up instead....

Interesting to know, MrsTittleMouse and BecauseI'mWorthIt, that it might have been the fizziness and fat that did it. Didn't actually WANT the banana fritters, but they arrived with a candle stuck at them and a lot of singing waiters, so felt duty bound! Will definitely give both booze and chinese a wide berth till delivery.

I adore champagne. I remember having a glass of champagne when I was about 20 weeks pg with ds1 at a lunch party (having had the odd sip of wine or beer from about 12 weeks). I was sick as a dog. I don't think I've ever felt more ill. I ended up in bed for the rest of the day.

Speaking as a Chinese person, I bet there was a certain amount of MSG in the food which is more than likely to have been the culprit. It commonly causes palpitations and nausea and can probably make indigestion worse as a result. Be careful of the sort of Chinese food you go for so you don't have a repeat experience. I think the champagne was probably only contributory to the indigestion, if at all, especially as you have been having a little wine (white?) regularly since 12 weeks.

welcome to mumsnet
like everyone else says the baby will be fine, half a glass is nothing to worry about at all
hope you feel ok at work today xxx

Happy belated birthday!

I've been right as a trivet after a glass of champagne but my goodness did a Chinese takeaway give me heartburn! Funnily enough my heartburn goes if I have a small bottle of Diet Pepsi (MN tip!) so I don't think the fizz has anything to do with heartburn for me. It seems to pretty much only happen if I've had takeaway food.
