19 weeks pg, tiny bump, loads of incredulous comments when I tell people I'm pg as I'm small, getting paranoid, is my baby growing ok?

Can feel him/her moving a lot, have a definite bulge but not in maternity yet.

Everyone keeps commenting on how small I am (size 8-10 usually) and getting paranoid nowthat babe isn't really growing.

Am I being ridiculous? just no one beleives I'm pg ( apart from people who see me everyday).

I didn't really show until I was about 30 weeks!

NotmyELFtoday · 19/04/2009 11:00

People were always surprised when I said I was pregnant, and honestly had hardly anything until I got to about 30 weeks when I got a bump.
I never wore maternity trousers etc, and as it was smock top season when I was pregnant, I hardly got any maternity clothes

McSnail · 19/04/2009 11:09

Everyone's different, eh?

suiledonn · 19/04/2009 11:14

minx On my second pregnancy I was the same. Went for a scan at 18 weeks and was saying to the doctor that if it wasn't for feeling movements I wouldn't believe I was pregnant as I had no bump at all. By 25 weeks people were telling me I must be having twins as I suddenly got huge! Had a lovely 8lb baby girl in November. There is no 'correct size' for a bump. Try not to take notice of the silly comments.

pinkpeony · 19/04/2009 17:16

I had the same, bump didn't really show until I was 24-25 weeks and didn't really need maternity clothes until then (am size 8 usually too). People kept making comments about how small I am / bump is and they still make those comments (am now 34 weeks). I found it annoying as they were always implying that baby must be so small. Meanwhile at 20 week scan the baby sized in the top 90th percentile and when ob measures my fundal height at antenatal appointments is always bang what it should be - i.e. 32cm at 32 weeks. At 34 weeks have very visible bump but people still making those comments as haven't put on weight elsewhere really. I guess just count yourself lucky as you will save money on maternity clothes and probably means you're healthy - less risk of gestational diabetes and the like if you're not putting on a lot of weight - and ignore the comments. Every woman is different in pregnancy.

sharkyandgeorge · 19/04/2009 17:24

With my first I wasn't really showing at 20 weeks, with my second I was slightly bigger but probably not noticeably pregnant, I def had a bump by about 25 weeks so i,m sure yours will start getting bigger from now onwards.

SheWillBeLoved · 19/04/2009 17:37

Horrible isn't it? I'm 27 weeks now, and can still pass as not being pregnant and just more podgy round the middle! I even stand in front of a mirror some days and just wonder how a baby of the size it's supposed to be right now is fitting in there without making a noticeable bump!

minxofmancunia · 19/04/2009 17:49

I think people expect you to, well blob out a bit really. I actually lost weight in the first 12 weeks cos felt so sick and ill struggled to eat and lived off fruit and ready brek.

Also have done ashtanga yoga and pliates every week for years so prob have reasonable stomach muscles (despite the ever present "wine waist" which covered them, until now! disappeared from no wine in the last 20 weeks, prob why i lost weight!!)

I hated it when people would comment how small it was looking... (do I comment on the size of their anatomy? I do not)

Anyway, when people would comment, I just say, 'Oh my god! Think I'll straight to the hospital and say something is wrong...'

That would really freak them out....

People carry babies differently.

searchingforananswer · 19/04/2009 18:15

I too was about 30 weeks before I had any sort of a bump (normally a size 10) and then in the space of a week or two it just grew at a rate of knots. Don't worry about it if the health professionals aren't. Enjoy not having to carry all the extra weight and feeling cumbersome for all them months.

duchesse · 19/04/2009 18:33

They're just jealous! Trim is good, you can keep moving and stay fit for much longer through the pregnancy. I'm on my 4th and have only just shifted to maternity at 23 weeks. Am definitely not a size 8-10 though- more like a 12. Have also had comments about the size of tum, but I take them as a compliment since Junior is usually dancing the lambada on my bladder at the time and very much not suffering!

DontlookatmeImshy · 19/04/2009 18:46

I was still in nornmal clothes (although that was elasticated stuff) at 20 weeks and didn't look at all pg. I could still hide it with the right clothes at 30 weeks. Ds was a healty 6lb5 at 37 weeks.

funtimewincies · 19/04/2009 19:03

If you saw me from the back when I was pg with ds you wouldn't have known. When I was overdue I was being asked how far along I was and having to say that I was due 2 weeks previously. Cue much raising of eyebrows! I asked the consultant about it (we got one routine consultant appointment then) and his comment was that 'given you're 5' I wouldn't be expecting you to be growing a whopper, your body knows what it's doing'.

Ds was 6lb 13oz and perfect in every way. He's now on the 80th percentile for height and looks like he's going to be a 6 footer like his dad !

Good luck and hope that you have a good pregnancy.

mamakoukla · 19/04/2009 19:12

Minx, the labour ward thought my auntie was a wind-up when she walked in claiming to be in labour. They almost sent her home... My cousin was definitely a normal size although I cannot remember his weight. Everybody's different.

I was still in normal clothes up to 18 weeks and not showing much until about 22 weeks. I wanted a bit more comfort and went into my maternity clothing at 21 weeks as I felt like I had had too much for lunch . My bump suddenly expanded furiously at around 35 weeks +

angel1976 · 19/04/2009 19:41

Minx, it's hard not to worry. I am petite too (size 8-10 as well). With my first, I couldn't eat at all in the first trimester so hardly put on anything. At 18 weeks, I went for a private scan and was convinced there was no baby whatsoever as it felt like a phantom pregnancy! And there it was... I didn't show till I was about 25 weeks (even then, I meant the tiniest hint of a bump). I put on most of the weight in the last trimester and by 4 months post-birth I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight (though more flabby than before!) without trying. So don't worry too much. It's hard not to with your first... I am now pregnant with my second and not going for an early scan (I did with my first) and have my 12-week scan at the end of the month and again, am convinced there's no baby as I have had no m/s this time round and again, no bump whatsoever despite them saying you show earlier with your second. Good luck to you!

I'm 36 weeks and still wearing my normal jeans and tops. I have a bump dont get me wrong, but when I said to someone at work 2 weeks ago that I couldnt wait to be off work (referrring to maternity leave), they said have a nice holiday/week off, they didnt even know I was pregnant! I prefer it this way and don't want to look pregnant. We didnt even tell my family till we were 20 weeks as I wanted it to be a surprise at xmas, and they hadnt even noticed at all. With my last pregnancy, I put on 4 1/2 stones and you couldnt tell that much that I was pregnant, all my weight seems to go on all over so people must just think I'm getting fatter. This time I have only put on 2 stones, but baby is breech so sitting higher up and even less of a bump than last time. Be grateful, its far easier as I still feel normal and not like a beached whale which I think for 36 week is pretty good going!

VictorVictoria · 21/04/2009 14:32

With DS I was pretty thin when I got pregnant but put on huge amounts of weight so just got very fat cant even remember how big the bump was. with DD I was tiny until after 20 week I really didnt show till then and I was freaked. I remained pretty compact all the way and she was born at 7.10 at 38 weeks. I am 16 weeks pregnant now and 40 and I have to say am MUCH bigger this time as I think my stomach muscles have given up the ghost.

pedalmonster · 21/04/2009 15:06

minx please try not to even think about what people say! Honestly, people want to acknowledge that you are preg but have no idea waht to say so think they MUST comment on the bump. I think every woman has someone say a thoughtless - ooooh your bump is tiny - ooooh your huge - ooooo are you having triplets coz you are so big - oooooh are you sure your preg, your tiny - etc etc.

Its weird coz people dont comment on otehr things, like size of nose or head (can you imaging - oooooh your nose is enormous! lol)but still think it is acceptable to comment on a pregnant womans size or shape. Ha - when we are at our most sensitive and emotional!
Its just people not thinking. I'm sure your bump is just perfect and in proportion to you and your baby.

worriedamy · 21/04/2009 16:20

I was exactly the same, still measuring two weeks behind now, and I am 31 weeks. I even had the midwife telling me 'you do look a bit small' and she sent me for a growth scan which showed the baby was all the right measurements. When I was sat in the waiting room for the 20 week scan people thought I was there for my 12 week scan. I only started wearing maternity clothes about 4 weeks ago too!! It just shows that you have stronger stomach muscles and your muscles are holding the baby and your uterus further back, but at one stage they will lose that battle, and you will pop right out!!

Don't do what I did though and think 'great, I'm well getting away with this weight gain thing' and go crazy on the donuts- now I have a face the size of a moon and a small bump!
