Anyone else been under a Consultant Obst, and why do they want to see me at 12 weeks?

Hi everyone,

Have just got a Cons. Obst appt through the post, I knew I'd be seeing one as I had an em CS last time round.

I will be 12 weeks - any idea what it's all about? It seems so early to be thinking about birth choices etc?

Any info appreciated!

I would imagine, if the em CS is the only thing worth mentioning about your last pg, then you'll be under him/her as a precaution. After the 12 week appt they'll assess whther you need to stay under the Obst or sign you off. If you stay under the Obst you'll probably just need to go to the odd appt at intervals during your preg. They just the do the same as the midwife appt - blood/urine/quick feel.

I had 2 high risk pgs and I didn't see the Obst that often at all until I was 28 weeks. But of a waste of time as far as I was concerned but they need to tick boxes to see that you're being monitored properly

I saw one straightaway when I'd had a em cs before. It means you are under the care of the consultant rather than just the midwife. They will encourage you to have a vbac but keep more of an eye on you.

In my experience they ususally plan your care at this appointment. I have growth scans so these get booked and mine did talk to me about the birth at my 12 week appointment - but I'm sure you don't need to have made any decisions by then.
If you are under Consultant care in my hospital you see them after each scan and they just review your notes and change plans if needed.

Guadalupe, how many times did you see the CO? I'm just wondering whether this is it!

I think it was 12 weeks, then the 20 week scan, then towards the end and then a few times as I went further overdue. I can't remember exactly, quite a few times though.

I had a emcs first time round and although I had MW led care for most of my appts. I did see a Consultant at 14 weeks (to debrief my last birth and talk about what sort of birth I hoped for this time - VBAC or elective), at 26 weeks (she just did my routine appt. and we discussed VBAC briefly) and at 34 weeks (had a big VBAC chat, I produced lots of evidence for no CFM and having an active labour etc, we drew up a birth plan and she signed it off...).
