hi there

i had a glucose test this week at 34 weeks(fasting, 4 lost of blood taken) and am waiting til Thursday to see doc and get results. i've been reading some stuff on the net saying it should be done at week 28 latest... doc said he thought it had been done (!) last week. i haven't had any urine tests, its been done as my last baby was 5kg - i haven't had diabetes and none of my family have.

is this usual, what should i expect?

Usually it's not the norm, given you had a good sized baby previously, which puts you in an "at risk" category and usually it would have been done around the 28 week time. But, as with many things in pregnancy and childbirth, it can depend on where you live and who is taking care of you as to how things are done.

Since you are in the last several weeks, if you have a high enough result to be of concern, you will likely be given a more extensive test to be sure...you should anyway and not just go on a single fasting result.

If it is shown that you do indeed have Gestational Diabetes, you will be given a diet to follow and shown how to monitor your levels throughout the day. Exercise each day can be helpful as well....walking is great. If it were very high, you may be put on meds to help as well. If you are just boarderline....exercise and watching what you eat, and when, may be all they recommend at this stage.

There is much debate on the topic, but an induction before your due date may or may not be suggested if you receive a diagnosis of GD.

I'm interested in this as my last baby was 5.5kg but I had clean GTT tests, last one at around 28 weeks. I do have high sugar in my urine tests though. I was wondering if I the developed GD after the test was taken as a reason for my boy being so big? I'm due the second GTT test on Monday as I am 28 weeks pregant again and obviously concerned that this baby will be as big...or bigger!

I find it a little frustrating sometimes not kowing why my baby was so gargantuan...but then again I sometimes just think it's down to the chemistry!

Sorry not to have aything more useful to say, just wanted to empathise! I hope all goes well Blueberry.

My Dsis is 35 weeks PG and has just had (another) GTT test as she is quite big herself and baby is huge!!

I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks and week on week I've had to have more insulin. I was told today that as the placenta grows (up to around 36 weeks), your bodies production of it's own insulin decreases, hence the need for diet monitoring or in my case, injecting myself four times a day (nice...).

My sister's was fine at 28 weeks but is now the border of being a bit high, so they will manage it for the next few weeks with diet.

In my case, I am a size 10-12 and 5ft 8 so they purely gave me the test because my Mum had late onset Type 2 Diabetes - so there's no rhyme and reason to it. But if they do have a concern, they may give you a late test and you may just need to monitor your bloods for the last few weeks.

Really don't worry, the hospitals are normally very helpful and will guide you. It's all for the health of you and the baby.

xx
