I am in the process of starting up a new business making nappy cakes and would love to know what peoples ideas are on what should be in them, how big they should be, what price they think is realistic??? All ideas/suggestions/comments welcome thanks xx

never heard of it

HensMum · 15/04/2009 11:45

Ahhhh, so essentially a load of baby gifts made to look like a cake?

To be perfectly honest, I think they look a bit naff. I wouldn't buy one as a gift as there's lots of things that some parents don't use - bottles, baby lotion etc and some things that people don't want more of, like soft toys so it seems like a bit of a waste of money.

tigerbump · 15/04/2009 11:48

so is vipsignaturegifts.co.uk your site?

ceebie · 15/04/2009 13:47

Sorry, too American and too lazy for me - I love going to the shop choosing toys/clothes/gifts for my friends' and families' new babies.

Also the name 'Nappy Cake' is horrendous and puts me off straight away.

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 15/04/2009 13:49

i don;t think you should really be advertising on here.. but i do think nappy cakes, if done well, are lovely. as long as they could be bespoke rather than a standard design

bunnymother · 15/04/2009 15:29

We were given one at our baby shower (if drinks w guys and girls at a pub is called a babyshower!), and it was lovely - a charming looking table centrepiece. Given that it was basically a few nappies, some socks and some cotton buds, I don't think they should cost much - no more than £20, and even then I would think twice as the "ingredients" cost far less than that. But it had the impact, so can see why people buy them.

hi tigerbump, no its not my site i got given a nappy cake as christening gift for my son from them and thats the first ive really seen them thought it was lovely idea and was thinking of maybe opening an e-bay shop but not sure i will people don't generally like the idea of them. just wanted to see what people thought before i bought anything!

Its a nice idea in principal, but i think most people like the fact they've gone out of the way to choose things they especially liked to give for a new baby, or something the parents actually need so they dont have to much of one thing. In agreement about the name, not the best. I did have to look it up to find out what it was.

CassORole · 15/04/2009 16:47

Nice idea but I'd feel so bad if someone bought me as they don't really represent great value for money to me.
I understand that isn't what a gift should be about, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

I'd much prefer the idea of someone picking out something especially rather than buying a packaged up idea.

I do however, understand that they are very popular, so I'm sure there is a market out there for them and if priced well - with good p&p I'm sure they'd sell to people who are into that kind of thing.

Chaotica · 15/04/2009 17:16

I'd be horrified if I got one. What a rip off (although they look sort of nice). I'd rather have a pack of 3 cute sleepsuits for a fifth of the price.

(and shouldn't you be paying to advertise?)

everGreensleeves · 15/04/2009 17:16

it sounds gutlurchingly awful

llareggub · 15/04/2009 17:29

We were presented one by my very proud step-mother.

It was awful. It was impossible to tell what size the nappies were, there pins everywhere holding it all together, and when I took it apart there were pins in the nappies. In my bewildered PFB state there was no way I was putting those nappies on my DS!

I can't remember what else was in it but we had far more useful presents. I can't imagine any parent would buy them for another.

clpsmum · 15/04/2009 20:19

seems like the general consensus is a no then! thanks everybody think i will give up on the idea glad i asked you all before invested any time and money it thanks for your advice and comments

I think they are naff.

Tabbykat · 16/04/2009 10:19

My office gave me one that they had made when I went on maternity - it was really nice that they had made the effort and it only cost them a box and a pack of nappies to contain the other stuff they had bought, Would definitely not spend money buying one though when they are really easy to make for about a fiver.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 16/04/2009 10:28

I think those bouquets they do always look lovely but at the end of the day they're just loads of socks aren't they? and I am very particular about my baby socks- the only ones that stay on are Baby GAP! I love it when someone chooses a cute little outfit or something, I usually go to TK Maxx cos you can find something really different there. I love buying new baby pressies- dh thinks I'm mad because even if it's someone I only vaguely know I have to buy a little outfit.
