am beside myself with worry... am 5+4 weeks preg and am now on my 5th day of light brown spotting. its my second pregnancy and i did not experience this with my first. the spotting is varying from brown and watery to brown and mucousey (sorry tmi) . spoke to my gp the day it started who was not very reassuring and said to do a preg test one week from the day the spotting started and then go and see him, my local epu will not scan prior to 6wks..am so stressed as convinced i have a blighted ovum or am going to miscarry but if so why doesn't my body get on with it as i have had no red bleeding at all.? i also have sore boobs but also very mild cramps so just dont know what to think, would really appreciate hearing from people who have experienced this but am preparing myself for the worst..thanks for reading this far..

Sorry to hear you're going through this. I've always thought that brown blood is generally not a bad sign, as it's old blood.

I'm afraid all you can do is wait this one out and get an early scan when you can.

Best of luck.

Dear Missymum,

get yourself booked in for a scan as soon as you can. The Dr may also be able to do some tests on specific hormone levels (taken a few days apart, to check that they are still rising as they should).

I had spotting for a few days during my first pregnancy and the most awful cramps ever. It was at roughly 5 weeks 4 days and lasted for four days. The cramps went on for much longer (I was later told it was the uterus stretching itself). My family dr was doom and gloom but I was lucky to have been seen by a lovely dr in ER (we waited for 14 h; apparently standard, just to see if you are going to hold on or miscarry) who said yes, it could be a miscarriage on the way, but it could also be implantation bleeding and mentioned a few other things. She sent me off for the two ultrasounds and hormone level testing to check o nthings and also to reassure us. We were lucky and now have a young DD.

I have my fingers crossed for you. Take it easy and get as much rest as you can. It's a stressful time but don't put yourself under unnecessary pressure.

Hi missymum, I'm sorry you are going through this.

I had the same as you with my current pg. Brown/watery light spotting started at about 5 weeks. It's my 3rd pg and I never had it with the other 2. I had a scan at 6 weeks which thankfully showed a heartbeat. I am now 10+ weeks and the spotting tends to tail off and then come back again.

It is so much more common than you ever imagine, but the wait to find out if all is ok is very distressing.

Fingers crossed for you xx

thankyou for the responses..pginthecloset did you continue to have preg symptoms and how long did your spotting last for? am going to try to see gp tomorrow to get him to refer me to epu for when i am 6 wks in a day or so and am wondering if my gp might do my first set of hcg levels. the waiting is just terrible and keep disolving into tears.. not sure whether to go to work or not this week, know that nothing will stop it if its going to happen though.

Missymum - I remember seeing brown and watery blood on the day my AF should have been due for my last BFP - it looked different to actual brown blood iyswim and seemed to be implantation bleeding ?

Fingers crossed for you

missymum · 13/04/2009 20:01

must admit had hoped it was implantation but had that already for a couple of days when period was late (have a short 26 day cycle)

Hi missymum, I wasn't really having pg symptoms at all which was adding to my anxiety that I had miscarried.

After the six week scan the spotting stopped for about 3 weeks and my pg symptoms really kicked in - sore boobs and terrible sickness. Now at 10 weeks I've had the odd bit of spotting maybe 2 or 3 times in the past 2 weeks but do still feel very much pg. I have my 12 week scan in two weeks and just so much want to see a well developed baby.

Good luck at the GP today. Mine did not offer to take bloods. Hopefully you will get a reasurring scan before the weekend x

I had bleeding from 5-11 weeks (am now 40!) It is a really scary time. The problem is that a GP can't tell you that everything is OK, because they quite simply don't know either.

FWIW I was told by EPU that this was all 'implantation' bleeding - they said it can go on until 16 weeks.

I would push for a scan this week, because at 6+ weeks they should be able to see enough for it to be reassuring.

missymum · 14/04/2009 18:17

thanks all for the support, it does help, pginthecloset sounds like you have had a stressful time too,it is such a horrid thing to go through and i would not wish this on anyone. two weeks can seem like an age. things sound more promising for you now though so good look and will think of you ...

saw a different gp today who was very nice and phoned epu straight away, but unfortunately the appointment is not until weds 22nd so i have over a week to wait! am absolutely gutted but i know the gp did everything she could as i was there in the room. hardly any bleeding today so just ddon't know what to think still

i had the same as you at 6 weeks and then again at 11 +6 but that time gushing red blood (it lasted for 5 weeks on and off)- however DS1 was born at 40 weeks perfectly fine after all of that.

Same thing happened for DS2 but without early spotting.

Fingers crossed for you xxxx

stillenacht · 14/04/2009 21:50

both times the drs said it was a blood clot or something around the placenta.
