Anyone else with a bicorniate uterus? (and 2 cervixes)

I have a bicorniate uterus, which means my uterus is "heart-shaped" uterus, is a type of an uterine malformation where two "horns" form at the upper part of the uterus.I also have 2 cervixes.

Before I got pregnant with ds in 2006, I had had many, many drs tell me that I would definitely have problems with conceiving, carrying a pregnancy and/or carrying to full term. My pregnancy with ds was fine, although my gp,mw and consultant were (thankfully) very, very cautious during my pregnancy.I went into labour when was 1 week overdue and my son weighed 4.3 kilos at birth and I was able to deliver vaginally.

I am pregnant again, but this baby is in the right half of my uterus, where ds was in the left side. I know that since I had 1 very succesful pregnancy and delivery I shouldn't be worried, but snce it is a new pregnancy in a different half of my uterus I worry all the time. If you do any research on bicorniate uterus, you will find a lot of scary stuff out there, lots of doom and gloom!

Ive never met anyone with a bicorniate uterus, and ststistically it seems to be very rare. I'd like to hear from anyone who has had there own experiences with their weird uterus!

Hi Riven,

That is the peculiar part. I had one gynae say it was actually a didelphic (sp?) uterus, which means 2 separate halves, but that diagnosis was overruled by many saying bicorniate uterus.

I guess unless I have to have a c-section I may never know the answer. At smear time it means 2 seperate smears, though. Very unpleasant!

I haven't done a search yet, but I defintely will!!

Oh yeah, and my cervixes are sort of on top of each other, not side by side.

I have a bicornate uterus. Was worried to start with and medical people said I might have difficulty conceiving. Fell pregnant the first month I tried and everything is going along smoothly.

I'm tending to just think it will go fine. I think it is like for you too. You did ok the first time so why not the 2nd.

Well I was found to have a bicornuate uterus with two cervixes and only one kidney! I had one daughter in the right womb and had a normal birth. My second daughter was breech and I had a C for her - apparently she would also have had to "turn a corner" so was for the best!! Hasn't affected me one bit - although it has to be said both my girls were only 5-9 at birth, one was a week early, one was four weeks early. Apparently they wouldn't grow any more in the confined space. Docs also told me (back in 1984!) I would have trouble conceiving. Only took one night tho!!

Depending on who I speak to, I have either a bicornate uterus or uterus didelphys (two separate wombs) - never actually been 100% confirmed, but I do have two cervices.

First baby was on left side and had elective c-section at 39 weeks; no problems with pregnancy at all. Attended premature prevention clinic for a few weeks as incompetent cervix is one of the potential issues with this, but again no problem. DD was breech for at least 10 weeks, which probably also led to need for c-section.

Pregnant again and worried all over again, especially because it is early stages so don't know which side baby is on!! Really interested to hear about vaginal birth with two cervices - I just assumed it wasn't possible!

Yes I had one of those, but due to hyser have it no more. Again hadn't heard of anyone else with one, and only found out about it when they tried to fit me with a coil and couldn#t as would have needed two. Have 2 lovely dss, both were small under 6lb.

Only had 1 cervix.

I've got one too but only one cervix and the womb only has a thin strip of extra tissue at the top. Apparently it looks like a "chubby" heart.
