Hi am 6 weeks pg. and very pleased! however my friends have known that ive always liked a drink or two, so to suddenly stop going out would give them huge suspician..

yesterday went on a pub crawl and drank G and T all day without the G. it was brilliant.. they thought i was as pissed as them but i didnt have drop.

now my dilema is that my best friends hen weekend is happening this friday..its all about eatng, drinking and games, with 10 girl friends. I will only be 7 weeks pg and will not be drinking.. What do i do.. fain some sort of illness and not go, or go and try and trick them all again, or tell them.. My friend will be upset/annoyed if im not there but not sure im ready to tell the world yet. Help

I just think if you can actually be out at 7 weeks rather than having your head stuck down the loo then you are actually incredibly lucky.

I would have used the 'stomach bug' excuse to stay at home and die.

The one that worked for me was to nominate myself as driver

When I was about 5 weeks pg with ds1, I had to go to a sales conference with all of my bosses. To Dublin. Dinner in...the Guinness Brewery. Absolute blimmin nightmare. I got one drink and just mingled a bit so that it wasn't too clear how many I'd had iyswim. Perhaps with 10 other people it'll be a bit obvious. Did they know you were trying to get pg(assuming you were)? Personally I would go, try to keep it quiet and fess up if you have to, but ask them to keep it quiet for a few more weeks.

I just get a lime and soda instead of a lime and soda. Or drink pop from a beer bottle.

CassORole · 15/04/2009 16:52

That should have been instead of Vodka, lime and soda!
My job had a huge drinking culture so couldn't get away with it really. I just made sure I kept my glass topped up so no one needed to buy me one.

We had this at Christmas with all the nosey harridans family about - I also went for the G&Ts, but was very ably assisted by my husband and the fact we were at home and I could easily pour my wine, champagne etc into his glass unobserved. On your own, and outside your own home is going to be trickier.

I'm having a similar problem having just found out that I'm 5 weeks pregnant. I was supposed to be going on a scuba diving trip next weekend with our club, I need a way to pull out of it without arousing suspicion. Then at the end of the month I'm off to a work conference in America for a week. It's usually considered a bonding session, with lots of alcohol involved, so I've no idea how I'm going to be able to keep it from my work mates for a whole week, any ideas as I really don't want to tell anyone this early on?

peachyfox · 16/04/2009 15:55

Maybe my friends are very (self-obsessed?) unobservant, but I just kept throwing my drinks away, abandoning them them on tables, or pouring them away in the loos and replacing them with water. Noone noticed. Waste of money though!

My reason for not telling about the pg would be more that it's your mate's hen do and it really should be all about her news not yours.

I had a similar situation at 6 weeks in my pregnancy and used the antibiotics excuse as I always drink and live very close to the venues so no need to drive.

I built up to it several days in advance, created a very elaborate story and i did actually have a dreadful cough so thought the chest infection excuse was quite convincing.

No one said anything and I thought I'd got away with it. When I did tell my friends at 16 weeks it turns out that they had all guessed and were wondering when I would finally get around to telling them all !!

Still...it was nice to have a bit of time to get used to the news myself before making any announcement and everyone understood why I had told a few white lies.
