... and it really hurts. i've never had it before, but had to take a course of strong antibiotics last week for an ear infection. am now extremely sore & itchy. have bought some canestan cream, 2 applications so far & it doesn't seem to be doing much. talked to out of hours dr who said it was ok to use in pregnancy (i'm 29 weeks). but shouldn't i be feeling better? how long will it last? i really have to go to work tomorrow as i've been skiving quite a bit recently. should i go to my own gp on tuesday if it isn't feeling a bit better? and how can i walk into the office in a normal fashion?!

it's really horrid isn't it bayleaf. mine has cleared up now, thank god. have you tried a pessary, i think that's what did the trick for me. canestan cream just seemed more of an irritant.

I haven't tried the pessary - do we have absolute reassurance that it is Ok? I'm due to see my consultant on thursday and was going to ask him. I used canesten cream last time so thougt it was ok - but when I went and asked the pharmacist she said 'see a doctor' which is daft as pharmacists know as much as doctors as to whether something is ok in pregnancy or not.

i was paranoid too, bayleaf, but my gp assured me it was fine, & then my obstetrician gave me another one - they have lots hanging around the antenatal clinic, i think they see a lot of it....

caneston pessaries and cream is safe during pregnancy as I used it almost weekly at some points!

hoxtonchick · 07/05/2005 21:23

definitely go for it. but get it on prescription if you can, then it's free .

I have found personally that pharmacists are reluctant to give any advice as soon as they know you are pg -they refer you to your doctor - they are terrified of saying the wrong thing!

Just to confirm I have just finished a course of canestan from the doc's. I was given the combi pessary as the cream wasn't clearing it up and it seemed to be getting worse. I'm currently 2 days off due date so wanted to get it cleared asap.
Doc said it's fine to use in pregnancy and in fact the pharmasist (?) came out to speak to me and advised me it is safe but NOT to use the applicator as if you are to heavy handed etc then it can cause bleeding and undue stress/worry. Instead he advised me to insert it myself to where it felt comfortable. sorry if tmi. Touch wood it seems to be on the right side of clearing up.
Want this baby to come on time but looks like we will have to try other methods than sex as I don't fancy it flaring up this late in the game

i've had almost instant relief from the pessary/cream combination after suffering on and off for weeks. i'd been avoiding it because i prefer natural remedies but it was affecting my sleep and general health in the end so i asked the midwife for something to help.

can't believe just how bad i was feeling down there, had almost forgotten what it feels like to be comfortable!!

hoxtonchick · 14/05/2005 09:05

it's really miserable isn't it moschops. i positively enjoy going to the loo now!

Thanks for all your help and advice ( the not using the applicator advice was backed up by my consultant who was fine about using pessaries )
am feeling much better!
