Ovarian cyst

Hi does anyone have any experience of this in pregnancy. I went for my 12 week scan today (turned out to be 9.5 weeks scan) and the midwife found a large cyst on my ovary. Obviously been googling and scared myself silly. I have to go back in 3 weeks to see the consultant, and be scanned again I presume. Funny enough she asked me if I had any pain and I said no, now I have an ache in my side probably from all the poking, or maybe just because I know it's there.

Hi - I had one of these with DS1. Went for scan at 12 weeks and there was an ovarian cyst measuring 10 x 10 cm. It had to be removed at 16-17 weeks, couldn't be done before then because apparently the corpus luteum which holds the pregnancy in place before the placenta takes over properly could have been in the cyst.

It was a scary time I have to admit but all was okay, cyst was removed and pregnancy carried on as normal - he is 9 now

Eek didn't realise it would have to be removed, the midwives were making soothing noises about monitoring etc gah. Oh well will have to see what happens

I had one which was painful, but while it was growing faster than DS for a while, had shrunk itself away by 18 weeks - so don't worry till you have to!

surprisenumber3 · 07/04/2009 22:35

I had to have mine removed just because of how big it was. If it had been smaller then they would just have monitored it. They also offered to drain it but said it would probably fill up again so I just decided to get rid of it.

It was ten years ago now though so things might be different now.

brettgirl2 · 08/04/2009 07:19

How big is it?

No-one even seemed to entertain that the 3.5cm one I had was a problem at all.

In fact it had completely disappeared by my 20 week scan.

BlackLetterDay · 09/04/2009 00:26

Thanks fro the replies, I think mine is around the same size as yours was surprisenumber3, I seem to remember 10cm being mentioned. Does anyone know what the dangers etc are? you know what google is like.

I don't know about the dangers blackletter - maybe a good idea to talk to MW/GP if you are worried?

If you are lucky then it may shrink.

I had one picked up at 9 week sacn, so was scanned again at 14 weeks then again at 20 weeks and 34 weeks, it remained 4cmx4cm but is a dermoid cyst so will need removing at some point.

The most important thing is that it wont impede a vaginal delivery, I would insist on regular scans to check the size.

It is prob a normal luteal cust, which will disappear, or it may be dermoid in nature like mine, which will never go and needs removing.

I just have to bide my time and decide when to get it removed......ds is ony 9 days old so not just yet

If it is 10cm diameter, I would def insist on a scan in a few weeks time

surprisenumber3 · 09/04/2009 10:29

mine wasn't a dermoid cyst. It was filled with clear fluid which the pregnancy hormones were making fill quicker than the baby was growing. The consultant's concerned was that it would twist or rupture, but of course there would be a lot of pain then so you would know.

Has a consultant had a look at it? I would think they would probably offer to drain it in the first instance, as I said, mine was ten years ago and things might have changed. I remember sitting there and wondering what to do and the consultant saying 'if you were my wife I'd want it removed' - which kind of made my mind up.

It has never come back, not 10 years and three pregnancies later!

Hi,

Just had a scan today to see if I am pregnant and there is an ovarian cyst on my right ovary 10cm x 10cm and also a tube coming from the cyst to my ovary. My embryo is dated at around 4 weeks 6 days and tbh really confused and no idea what the doctors will do as it is causing no pain at all and have to go for another scan and blood test next week.

Any advice will be much appreciated as this is my first pregnancy after one previous miscarriage (miscarried 2 months ago and cyst has grown since then)

Thank you

I had an ovarian cyst removed at 18 weeks PG with my son, they said once removed it was the size of a smal water melon, it was very scary at the time and it did take a little while to recover, but my son is now 20 yrs old and very healthy and very intelligent ( even if I say so myself , it caused no effects on him at all and I went to term he was 3 days late and had a normal delivery, I then went on to have my daughter shes now 18yrs and had no problems at all with the PG.

I am now 9+4 with my 3rd, slight age gap there lol

really hope you are ok and things go really well for you, this also happened to my best friend her son is now 13yrs, so it seems it does happen quite a bit and things do turn out fine.

Take care xxx

I had this when pg with dd. I was in pain so had a scan at 7 weeks and had 2 cysts - Both around 5cm x 6cm.

I was told that they should go on there own and they did. By 12 weeks they had gone.

smartiejake · 28/05/2009 18:06

One of my friends had an ovarian cyst which was picked up at around the 12 week scan- like you she had no pain. They monitored it and a few weeks later it had gone.

hawesmead5 · 28/05/2009 18:35

Hi there
I had a cyst picked up at a 6 week scan with my last pregnancy it was 17cm x 11cm, it was attached to my fallopian tube. It was fluid filled and I ended up having it drained under local anethetic 5 times, although each time it grew back to the previous size. However it gave the baby chance to dominate the space and it ended up growing up in a walking stick shape and filled up under my ribs! Anyway I had a healthy pregnancy and gave birth naturally. I had it removed by a fairly major op 2 months after the birth of my son, but recovered very quickly.
By the way I had no pain from this until the very final weeks of my pregnancy when it was pushing under my ribs.
Anyway the consultants were great and I'm sure everything will be fine for you and baby, but just make sure you discuss all the options

Hettygt · 29/05/2009 16:36

Wow,

Thank you all so much for the responses! It really has put my mind at ease as I have realised that I just need to relax and trust everything will work out for the best! I have anotehr scan next week to check which shall hopefully show the little one growing and the cyst either stabalising or shrinking. Even if it grows, as long as it does not cause complications I don't care

Thank you all so much for your advice and help.
xx
