12 week scan...or not?

Due to the vague booking system of my GP, I have ended up with my first hospital appointment coming the day before my first midwife appointment. Am sure this isn't a problem for the most part, but I'm just really confused about whether it is for a scan or not at the hospital now.

My GP made the appointment for me early, as he wanted me to get in and see the doctor sooner rather than later as I will need to have an elective caesarean when the time comes. I've had through my letter giving me the appointment details, saying it will take a couple of hours, but not mentioning a scan anywhere, or the requirement for apparently drinking lots of water beforehand. Part of me thinks that I must be having a scan as what else are we going to be doing for a couple of hours, but then they've not mentioned it, so not sure.

Any advice? What information did you all get beforehand? I'll be gutted if it's not a scan as I'm a totally paraniod bunny so desperately keen to see the little thing on screen, hopefully all present and correct!

Yes that will be a scan. The water is to make the scan easier. congratulations

It's just that the letter didn't say anything about the drinking water, or the scan, hence my confusion. Am sure I'm worrying for nothing though.

Thank you for your congratulations - am so excited!(when not worrying about silly things )

Hi Lucky,

We had an appointment at the hospital and midwife a week apart - we didnt have a scan at the 1st hospital appointment, we recieved a seperate letter from the ultrasound department that stated all the scan details, I would say that you're probably not getting a scan at this appointment, you're just getting in to see the consultant so that they have you on their list etc.

After the 1st hospital appointment we had a scan about a week afterwards, as I said the correspondence was completely seperate.

Hope that helps a bit, however it may be different at your hospital.. Our "12 week dating scan" was not done until we were 14 weeks 6 days.

yeah when its the scan you get loads of strict instructions, sothink yours is some type of hospital booking, with consultant if ELCS on the cards.Good luck and congrats!

I had an ELCS last time, piece of cake. youll be fine.

P.s Sorry Lucky with all my haste i forgot that i hadnt congratulated you, Congratulations at not saying earlier.

spicemonster · 07/04/2009 14:13

Oh sorry - totally misread your OP. Yes, that's just a booking in appointment and then you'll get a dating scan after. Once you're in the system though, you can get follow up appointments quite quickly.

spicemonster · 07/04/2009 14:13

And don't worry about how the baby is going to come out for now - there's plenty of time for that!

spicemonster · 07/04/2009 14:19

sorry, I don't know why that is happening on my posts

lucky1979 · 08/04/2009 14:16

Thank you everyone, for the advice and the congratulations!

At least I'm able to tell DH he doesn't need to come to this one, it's so difficult for him to get time off work (and if there is lots of waiting around he'll just fidget and be a pest - would rather take a book and go on my own! )

To be sure, you could contact your local PCT/ Hospital trust to see what their guidelines are. This pregnancy I have a timetable of appointments and scans, which is very helpful.
