NURSING BRAS

I got myself measured yesterday (will be 37wks tomorrow) I bought a plain 2 pack of M & S bras that will do for bed but want to get some pretty ones for day time. I can't decide what to do about sizing though - surely I will lose a bit off my back size and increase a bit in the cup size in the first month or so of feeding? Last time I breastfed I ended up really skinny, obviously I can't plan too far in advance - but am I better to buy the size I was measured at or assume the weight is going to come off quite quickly and go for, eg, a 36C instead of a 38C???

Just buy a couple of different sizes and keep the receipts and the boxes. After the birth, once you know what you need, you can send the other half out to buy more, giving him the boxes so he knows what he's looking for.

that's true, thanks. Can always get some more once baby's here I suppose - shops don't disappear once you've given birth do they!

Have you seen hotmilk?

BabyBaby123 · 05/04/2009 19:49

would love some Hotmilk ones! They are gorgeous but so expensive....

at 37 weeks you're likely to lose a little more across the band as your ribs settle back after the baby's dropped. nursing bras are extra stretchy to accommodate changing cup sizes throughout the day (e.g. before/after a feed), but measuring for nursing bras during late pg we tend to assume a cup size increase on average.

hotmilk are fab, tend to be generous in the band (i.e. go down 1 or even 2 band sizes if in doubt), they're really stretchy with loads of hooks so will accommodate more than one size difference. cups tend towards generous too, if you fit 38Cs well now (i.e. band is firm enough to give good support - can fit a couple of fingers under, but not much more) i would be looking at 34DD (don't remember off top of head if they do DDs, if not then an E) in hotmilk (when you go down a band size you go up a cup to keep the cups the same size).

out of interest what's your current/standard dress size? that usually gives a good indication of likely band size.

if you're planning to bf past 6 months, believe me, nice undies, especially matching ones, really are worth it to feel some kind of normal

thanks for that, that's really helpful. I'm definately going to invest in something decent this time as last time I bf for a year and wore basic nursing bras which I hated.

I was a size 8 when I got pregnant - my maternity clothes are mostly 10s - no idea what size I'm going to end up this time!
Ended up with no boobs at all last time after feeding for a year!

no way are you a 38 then @ m&s

tbh i'd look at 32s (try 32E and work from there) in hotmilk (sadly not available in every style), unless you have a really strong aversion to anything close fitting around your ribs.

for e.g. i'm 10ish now and my hotmilk 32 is slightly looser than i prefer on the tightest setting, but i like them new-style and tight on the band it fitted fine when i was 12-14, but i'm fairly narrow across the back.

BabyBaby123 · 05/04/2009 20:58

thanks, will look at Hotmilk - have seen they are reduced on some sites but obviously only in certain sizes.

I must say, I didn't have much faith in M&S at all - 38 does sound ridiculous considering I was a 32 before pregnancy!!

The girl doing the fitting had not done it before and they were all giggling and silly about measuring a pregnant woman and tried to get a 20 year old male shop assistant to do it which I declined

i think there is a boutique type place near me which does Hotmilk, I might go in there and get measured again.

Thanks.

indie shops are a great place to get fitted imho, as they've made it a core part of their business, rather than it being an afterthought like at m&s. best yet if you can try the brand you're after (hot milk are definitely more generous than others). tbh if you have something to wear immediately after birth it might be worth waiting till you've had your baby to get fitted again, if the boutiquey place is easy for you to get to, takes away some of the guesswork re band sizes.

BabyBaby123 · 05/04/2009 21:32

yes, i think i'll make do with what i've got and go in there as soon as poss after the birth. thanks again

Hi there,

My "Bump to 3" magazine came through this week and I noticed in there that they do drop-cup nursing bras that are adjustable up to two cup and back sizes. They only come in black and white but may do you until your size settles down (apparently it says that your breast size changes through the day depending on feeding times - this being my first - I have no idea...).

They are £21 each and come in black and white. www.bumpto3.com
