Too much acid reflux, sick of taking gaviscon

Hello, I'm about 35 weeks in second time around suffering with way too much acid reflux/ indigestion. I've got gaviscon from the GP but feel like I'm taking too much and possibly made myself ill with it yesterday. I had it bad first time but don't remember it being like this. I know I've only got a few weeks left but there has to be an alternative: drinking milk, not eating (constantly)? What?? My brain is stalling, help please.

Go back to the GP, tell them it isn't working and ak for Omeprazole.

Cazzaben · 04/04/2009 20:50

Or ask for Ranitadine... Stops the build up of acid in the stomach. I took it 3 times a day towards the end of my second pregnancy... x

What sort of gaviscon? I'm on the chewable tablets and they've been brilliant - although my consumption is increasing.

needsomesleepplease · 04/04/2009 21:35

Cazzaben - what strenght of ranitadine are you on? i'm on 150 twice a day and have been told that that is the max i'm allowed but over the last week it is not enought now so i am also taking gaviscon. I'm going to try and get to docs on Monday to see if they can do anything more!!

I was given ranitadine a few months ago before I got big. Now my insides are more squished up the tabs have stopped working and I am relying on gaviscon (liquid). Taking things in advance didn't work, I seem to need a cure there and them esp if DS is playing up!

Well I was taking Gaviscon at the same time as ranitadine. I honestly cant remember what strength I was on it was over a year ago now... I'm sorry

vanilla ice cream worked like a dream for me. G&B vanilla icecream, half a tub sometimes, less usually.

Omeprazole is much better than rinitidine.

IME rinitidine becomes less effective the longer you take it for anyway.

Omeprazole is what they give people (like me) who have this type of heartburn all the time (not just in pg)

Cazzaben · 05/04/2009 15:44

Hmmm... That'll probably explain a lot about why I kept on getting heartburn then... I still get bad heartburn now (even after a bowl of cereal). So should I be asking for Omeprazole then??
I also take diclofenac everyday and I heard recently that it can cause heartburn...

MommyHasaHeadache · 05/04/2009 17:35

Omeprazole worked for me and I really suffered!

Carameli · 06/04/2009 19:57

another vote for omeprazole here. Suffered terribly even with gaviscon and eventually went back to gp and she gave me this. Its fab, have had no symptoms since starting it. Just one tiny capsule a day!!

try cutting down on dairy!
i had hideous heartburn with first 2 pgs. third time round was not eating dairy as ds2 is intolerant and no heartburn.
then, i stopped feeding him and started eating dairy again and voila- heartburn.
cut it out, no more heartburn.

tis worth a try!

brettgirl2 · 06/04/2009 20:21

Yes, I've tried that (and also wheat). I find cutting out dairy if I am very bad helps a bit but doesn't entirely get rid of it. Consultant said that lactose is very difficult for everyone to digest whether you are actually intolerant or not. Therefore food in stomach longer = HB worse.

stanausauruswrecks · 06/04/2009 20:58

Cazzaben - I wasn't sure from your post, but are you pregnant at the moment? Diclofenac and anti inflammatories in general shouldn't be taken in pregnancy, especially in the third trimester.(Unless it's prescribed in exceptional circumstances)

Cazzaben · 06/04/2009 23:54

Oh no Im not pregnant... Dont' worry!!!!
... Just wanted to post as I still suffer with heartburn even now... x
