Oh my God, baby has arrived 2 months early

Posting very hastily in state of complete shock after giving birth on 10 April, exactly 2 months before my due date. Got ill with severe food poisoning plus urinary tract infection and these combined seemed to set off the labour. Hospital at first said they could stop it, no problem, but drugs proved ineffective and a few hours later I was in full-on labour. The whole experience felt like a nightmare, not least as I was just recovering from a horrible illness and hadn't eaten for days. Also the special care baby unit at Kings was full to bursting so as the labour was advancing the midwives were ringing round all over the south east trying to find a unit with space. In the end, the labour went too quick for them to move me, thank God and the baby has been squeezed in at Kings which is SO lucky as the unit is brilliant, also I have a two year old who needs me to be at home, not camping out in Portsmouth or wherever. Baby is doing OK though not great, all we can do is hope and pray she will come through. In the meantime I'm back in normal clothes, taking my toddler to the park as though nothing has happened and feeling like a complete madwoman. Sorry this is so long and rambling, just have so much to get off my chest.

Congratulations, Jodiesmum ? thinking of you and little Jessie. You're in very good hands at King's, and she sounds like she's a good weight ? hope all goes well for you both and you have her home very soon.

Congratulations jodiesmum.Hope that Jessie grows stronger and stronger everyday so that she can soon be home with her family.

2 months early must have been quite a shock had you got anything ready?

Marina · 16/04/2003 15:20

Jodiesmum, congratulations on the birth of little Jessie and hoping she is home with you safe and sound very soon. I would not have thought there was a better SCBU in London than King's, but I hope they are remembering to extend the tlc to you as well. It must have been such a shock!

jessi · 16/04/2003 16:27

Congratulations to you Jodiesmum, I do hope your little one pulls through quickly so you can have her home. I also love the name too!

Hi Jodiesmum, I rememember you from the "babies due June/July onward" or was it the "mid 2003" thread? (am a bit scatterbrained at mo hee hee ) I remember how supportive you have been to all at thread and just want to add my support now. I send congratulations to you and your fam.
and second all the good wishes others have sent. I am an example of a "premmie" I weighed 4lb and was in incubator etc. I was fairly ill but 25 years later am here to "tell the tale" Please look after yourself as you have been through alot and need support as much as Jessie does. Thank You for sharing your news, Champs xxx
PS. Sorry for going on and on, once I get started....

Jodiesmum · 21/04/2003 12:48

Thanks everyone for your support and good wishes, I can tell you it really helps a lot as some people closer to home seem to be keeping out of our way. It's also hard going out and about and seeing neighbours etc who don't know what's happened - it's obvious I'm not pregnant any more but with no baby, I guess they don't know what to say. Anyway, the good thing is that little Jessie is hanging on in there, having a difficult time with her tummy but it seems like we've got to expect that and at least her breathing is really good. I'm getting more used to hospital visiting but still cry every time I have to leave. The SCBU is next to the labour ward so most times I see mums coming out with full size new babies ready to take home and can't help feeling like a failure. Why couldn't I keep her in a bit longer?

Jodiesmum - congratulations on the birth of your little Jessie - how is she doing tonight? i know haow up and down they can be , one moment you're elated and then the next you're distraught. How is your partner coping with it all?

I have had 2 prems , dd at 31 weeks and more recently ds at 29 weeks. Please don't hesitate to ask anything , or just use us to unload Thinking of you.

judetheobscure · 21/04/2003 21:41

I remember when I finally got to bring my dd home after 6 weeks in SCBU, I decorated the outside of the house with loads of pink and white balloons and ribbons, just so everyone got the hint that she was home and felt safe to come and talk to me again.

Hi Jodiesmum,
Just wondered how you and Jessie are doing now? Hope she is home with you.
Best wishes
Jessi

Jodiesmum · 19/05/2003 19:31

Hi again, thanks for asking. Things are going really slowly for Jessie and I think she wil be in hospital for a long time yet. Though she's growing well and has a great pair of lungs on her, she is unable to digest milk (mine or formula) so is still being fed intravenously. She's had tests to see if there's any obstruction in her gut and it seems like there's not so it's a mystery really. The doctors say a few babies have really slow guts which take ages to get going and that's probably the thing with Jessie, in which case it will be just a matter of time. For us, it's completely frustrating and very frightening as there are no guarantees about whehter the problem will resolve itself or whether anything more worrying will crop up along the way. ONe of the hardest things is this type of problem does seem to be quite unusual and poor Jessie is surrounded by much younger and smaller babies who are feeding away like anything. THankfully I did hear of one today who took until 2 months after his due date to feed properly but is now fine. Anyone else heard any similar stories? (happy endings only please)
