Anyone not feel baby move until quite late on?

Hi - I'm twenty one weeks down the line, and still(to my knowledge) haven't felt the baby move. I know every woman's different, but wondered if this is 'normal'. I've had the 20 week scan and everything seemed fine - maybe the child is simply lazy. Like me.
Just looking for reassurance, I suppose. This is my first pregnancy.

I didn't feel either of mine move until almost 22 weeks. My midwife told me that we only really feel the baby kick if the movement is out towards front. Even yesterday she could hear it moving through the doppler and I wasn't aware of it - and I'm 33 weeks now. Also, some babies don't move as much as others...maybe you've got a very comfy womb!

McSnail · 01/04/2009 10:39

Thanks for that - I'm not worried as such (yet) but everyone I talk to (there's a massive pregnancy boom where I live - I have several pregnant friends) says they felt movement from about 18 weeks...

was the baby moving on the scan? if so, it could the position of your placenta is cushioning your baby's movements. Have you spoken to your MW about it?

Patchybob · 01/04/2009 10:50

Have a look at your notes from your scan. It could be that your placenta is anterior, which means that it is in the front and kind of acts like an air bag, cushioning the kicks so you don't feel them.
I am 25 weeks with my 3rd and only just feeling regular kicking as my placenta is anterior.

Mhairi100 · 01/04/2009 11:17

First felt my baby move at 22 weeks exactly - its my first too. I'm now 32 weeks and the movements are so fierce they sometimes take my breath away! Don't worry, you'll soon be kept up at night by your wee one's thumps too

McSnail · 01/04/2009 11:26

Jeez - am I supposed to be given notes from the scan? Wasn't given anything. I have a GP appointment at 22 weeks - I'll ask then. Although I imagine the midwife would probably be more in the know about that kind of thing...
TBH, I'm a bit backwards about coming forwards - medical staff always seem so harassed and busy and (probably because this is my first child) I don't really know how I should be acting. Does that sound totally wet? I don't even really know what questions to ask, or how pushy I should be about certain things.
Next time I see midwife, I'll ask about notes, and ask about the anterior placenta thing. Thanks.

i felt my first at abot 18 weeks but my second much later and i had anterior placenta then.
your notes from scan will be in your maternity booklet/notes that you will have been given at the beginning and you have for each appt?

nuttygirl · 01/04/2009 11:32

They usually print out a 'report' (one sheet of A4) with soem info on from the scan and stick it in your maternity notes.

With dd I felt kicks from the day before the 20 week scan. This time it's been a bit later but I know at the scan the sonographer said baby was in a ball really low down & v lazy .

McSnail · 01/04/2009 11:36

'your notes from scan will be in your maternity booklet/notes that you will have been given at the beginning and you have for each appt?'

Nope - I haven't been given anything. All I have in my 'notes' are the results of some blood tests I was given for spina bifida and other conditions. I will def. bring this up when I next see midwife!

I didn't really feel any movement until around 22 weeks. With hindsight think I had been feeling them before then, but I thought it was just gurgling tum/ bit of wind!

MrsHappy · 01/04/2009 14:20

With my DD I was about 22-24 weeks before I really noticed her move. It's possible she had moved before but since it feels a lot like your gut gurgling it was hard to tell. My placenta was on the front too.

lastboxoftampons · 01/04/2009 15:45

I have a friend who's just 23 weeks and just started to feel the baby this past weekend.

As for speaking up - if there's one thing I've learned over the past 24 weeks is no one's going to read my mind! If you have questions, ask them! That's what the midwife is there for and it will make you feel so much better!! I understand not wanting to be a pain, but I'm sure you're not and if you ask your questions with a smile, they are usually kind right back. Good luck!

McSnail · 01/04/2009 18:19

Thanks for that.

in my first pregnancy I didn;t feel any movements until 23wks!

the midwife and sonographer were very shocked when I had the scan, a very active baby inside, and I felt nothing.

with my second.......I felt her move at 12wks

Patchybob · 02/04/2009 09:34

Hi, what I was referring to was the report that you get given after the scan, with details of size etc on it. They should give it to you to put in your file, but perhaps yours gets sent to your midwife?

McSnail · 02/04/2009 09:50

Possibly, Patchbob. I have a GP appointment next week, so I'm going to query.

Hi McSnail, I agree with Juwesm I first felt ds move around 23 weeks (how terrible not to remember- he's my first as well!) and then I realised that it was my baby and not the wind or gurgling tummy I thought it had been! I worried all the time about movement, I'd also read that after you feel the baby move the first time you feel it every day. Not in my case so then I panicked that I couldn't feel him again. Going to my midwife appts and hearing the heartbeat was always a relief. As he got bigger though I felt him lots, but then only one side of my tummy- more worry for me, not the midwife, I think she thought I was neurotic! I probably was.

However despite all my panic and worry he came out a healthy 7lb 40z and screamed for the first 15mins of his life. I think it's all to do with the position your baby gets in, I could only ever feel one foot (yes of course I panicked if he had two despite having scans showing all body parts present and correct- I am a worrier )but my ds still crosses over his feet a lot now so maybe that was what he did in the womb?

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and if you are really worried speak to your midwife but I'm sure you're little bub is absolutely fine, just not doing it's disco dancing in places you can feel yet

McSnail · 02/04/2009 10:12

Thanks for that - very reassuring.

I had my 24wk midwife appointment on Tuesday and got my 20wk scan notes then and read that i have an anterior placenta. I think i was around 20wks when i felt the baby move first. Like someone else said i can hear the baby moving around on my doppler but can't always feel them.

Joycey29 · 02/04/2009 12:43

Hi McSnail,
I had low amniotic fluid with both my dd and ds and this led to sluggish movements and with ds really not alot!
Don't panic just as long as the midwife is happy!
