I just got back from my 34 week check, the midwife says I am measuring 36 weeks which puts me just over the line for the 90th percentile. She didn't seem worried and just said we would have to keep an eye on it.Just wondered what happens if baby carries on growing like this!

Well, 10% are going to be over the 90th centile...

Don't fret. Mine were both above that and it was all fine. I did get a bit when I went overdue and all I could think was "it's just getting even bigger"

bigcar · 31/03/2009 17:04

I think measuring within 2 weeks is considered normal. It's policy at my hospital to only refer back to the consultant if measuring 3 or more weeks ahead. I'm currently measuring 6 weeks ahead and they're not in any hurry to do much! HTH

I was told this with DS4 (can't remeber how many weeks) in a very serious tone by the radiographer. I then asked the doctor who was very offhand about it so I didn't know whether it was a concern or not but DS4 was born on his due day at 8lbs 10 so not massive by any means.

As TFM says - by definition 10% are always big but I wouldn't worry unless the doctor/midwife has any other course for concern, maybe if you are very small or have a small pelvis.

phew! thanks for the replies, feeling reassured now!

Was also told this about your gestation. DD was on the 50th centile when she was born, a managable 7lbs 14oz. Third trimester scans and fundal measurements are notoriously inaccurate.

CarGirl · 31/03/2009 18:42

I looked huge but only measured 39 at 42+2 dds was 10lb 6oz - it is really only an indicator tht baby is growing IYSWIM

It's a really inaccurate way of guesstimating your baby's size - don't fret!

i was told i was expecting a 9lb + baby, according to measurments - a bit scary as i am very small! dd was 4 days late and only 7lb 3.
as others have said, it's all pretty inaccurate. hopefully, you'll be fine.

My DS measured 42 weeks when I was 36 weeks - I went for 2 emergency scans which gave him an estimaged birth weight of about 10lbs and 11lbs respectively.

He was born naturally 5 days overdue weighing in at 8lbs 10oz.

mmmcheese · 01/04/2009 12:42

thanks for the link!if a scan can't give an accurate result there's no way measuring my stomach with a tape measure is going to be able to!

Measuring your tummy from the outside is useless to predict birth weight. I'm that is considered an antenatal 'check' in the UK in this day and age.

With ultrasound, it depends on quality of equipment and skill of the doctor operating it. Mine was excellent. Predicted DD at 4 kg and she was born 4 kg 10 gr - almost an exact prediction.

paddypoopants · 01/04/2009 13:53

I agree fundal measurements are useless - depends how baby is lying, what size you were to start with, if you're a little bloated and most importantly who's measuring you. The 4 different midwives I saw told me I was having a whopper after measuring me and he was a gigantic 6lbs 11 oz. Same with my sister - giant babies predicted and both under 7 lbs.I had a total panic between weeks 29 and 35 as according to the 2 midwives I saw I put on 5cm in 2 weeks and then none in another 2 weeks - because they both measured me in a totally different way.( that is one bothered to do it properly and another didn't). If they're really worried they'll do a growth scan
