There, I've said it.

19ish weeks into my 3rd pregnancy now so I should remember all this...

Had one this morning and afterwards my tummy went tight as a drum down one side. Why does that happen? Is it the baby going "WTF?" and cowering in one corner?

Or is it just some new kind of uterine contraction?

The other thing is that orgasm seems to go on for ages, shakes my whole body and starts right up under my ribs. Of course this is lovely, but there are nights when I just want a quick "Aah thanks and goodnigzzzz" rather than a go on the rodeo.

And while we're at it... I have a tendancy to hold my breath, which I've been avoiding in case it harms the baby, so everything takes forever.

Some people are never satisfied eh?

I had a similar situation and my MW told me that sex can bring on Braxton Hicks, and that it's nothing to worry about. Sounds like that's what might be happening to you.

Like you, I've been quite lucky in that my sex drive has rocketed during PG. I'm 30 weeks tomorrow and we're still both enjoying it - shame I have to have the baby really because mine will no doubt plummet afterwards, back to normal!!

Gentle · 14/04/2009 21:56

Can I shamelessly bump this? I think I'd be able to relax a lot more if I knew there were a few of us who've experienced this.

I know I should be able to talk to my midwife but I don't have another appointment for 4 weeks and don't feel I can ring her mobile to describe my interesting orgasms to the poor woman...

An orgasm causes a contraction - ans as your uterus is bigger the contractions do start higher and last longer IYSWIM. Perfectly normal

MrsMerryHenry · 14/04/2009 22:00

Oh, and

(wishes that egomaniacal Gentle would stop showing off. )

SlightlyMadStirrup · 14/04/2009 22:03

And it is not some "new" type of contraction. Thay are all the same - period pains, braxton hicks, and orgasm all cause the release of oxytocin which is what causes the uterus to contract. Interestingly they all have a function. In the case of period pains it is to expell the lining of the womb, in pg it is to expell the baby, in an orgasm it is to help draw the semen into the uterus to aid conception.

All perfectly normal and functional

Gentle · 14/04/2009 22:04

MrsMerryHenry I am so sorry to be showing off! This is why I'm not raising it with anyone in RL - what a stupid "problem" to have.

I am genuinely worried about this though, particularly the holding breath thing.

I'd forgotten that...
incredible orgasms during pregnancy and loads of them during saucy dreams too.

MrsMerryHenry · 14/04/2009 22:07

Only teasing, honey pie! And you're the least egomaniacal person I've encountered on MN.

Hope someone with a useful contribution is able to put your mind at rest.

LadyOfWaffle · 14/04/2009 22:09

I had this - either trigger a BH, or just... dunno, must maybe be different in pregnancy

Gentle · 14/04/2009 22:15

Gee thanks MrsMerryHenry I knew 'twas in jest!

ingles2 Exactly, these are a unique couple of months in a woman's life - you even have an excuse not to make any effort at all in bed - and I am bloody well going to make the most of them! If only I could stop being so spooked by the after-effects...

Don't know about the holding breath thing, but did have the rock 'ard bump afterwards. From about 20weeks-ish onwards, it did seem to go harder down one side, but it tended to be wherever the baby had its arse so it was a combination of contraction and solid little body underneath, I think.

SlightlyMadStirrup · 14/04/2009 22:20

I have only enjoyed a bit of solitary entertainment for about 12m of my life total

ingles2 · 14/04/2009 22:21

Don't be spooked Gentle. I'm positive it won't affect the baby in any way, shape or form. Just enjoy them you lucky thing.

ingles2 · 14/04/2009 22:22

Yes Poledra, you're right!!!!! I had that too.

ingles2 · 14/04/2009 22:23

Actually some of my dreams were so realistic and the orgasm so intense, I'd wake up and cry for a good hour that I wasn't really shagging Brad Pitt

Gentle · 14/04/2009 22:31

Ooh ingles2 I haven't had any dreaming ones yet. Several of you have one up on me! Not fair, when do I get my visit from Brad Pitt? If he's not available, can I have Kyle Machlachlan or Donald Sutherland from about 1985 please? Form an orderly queue there, subconscious gents...

SlightlyMadStirrup Is that 12 minutes or 12 months? If the latter, did you stop for food and sleep?

Poledra Thank you, that's reassuring, that sounds exactly like what I get.

Poledra · 14/04/2009 22:35

Careful what you wish for Gentle - some of the norty dreams I had during pregnancy made me when I woke up. Honestly, I'd never dream of doing that in RL (that would be non-pregnant dream, of course ).

ingles2 · 14/04/2009 22:40

It was reasonably late Gentle, hopefully you've got it all to come
I just reminded DH of this and all he can remember is the odd shaped hard bump. He said that freaked him out a bit. He says sometimes it was a really strange shape.

SlightlyMadStirrup · 14/04/2009 22:43

12 months - 6m from each pg cos you can't feel it for first 3m...actually it should have been 9m as I was cheated out of 3m of pg the first time

Gentle · 14/04/2009 22:50

ingles2 thank goodness, that happens to me, too. Close to the end of my first pregnancy I looked like... Let's just say a diagonally pointy woman.

It would be great if this went on for 6 months in total. If last time's anything to go by though, heartburn and immobility start to come in just as nausea and tiredness are becoming a distant memory...

There's a nice bit in "Up the Duff" about being able to tell when a woman is "term" because she has corners :-)

The holding your breath thing is if you are doing it for a fairly long period of time.. now, I really don't need that kind of information, but assume you don't hold your breath for 2/3 minutes at a time, 10-20 times in a row to get there?????

If you do, then it might be a tinsy problem. if it's just a moment or two a few times, I'd just enjoy it (please, someone needs to be enjoying this pg. thing!).
