Question about GD

Got my blood test results back today from midwife and after my GTT a month ago my glucose reading was 7.4. No one has been in touch with me about this and the midwife seemed to think it was quite a high reading, but other than that she said there was nothing I could do. I am a bit confused esepcially as this test was 4 weeks ago and things could have got worse since then. Anyone know if this is a high reading, the test was the one where you don't eat overnight and then drink 300ml of lucozade and have the blood test an hour later. Should I be worried?

Hi there,

Whereabouts are you in your PG? I had my GTT two weeks ago and had a reading of 4.9 to start with and then 9.2 afterwards and I am now classed as Gestational Diabetic.

Apparently with GD, it gets worse as the PG goes on, so if you had your test at 28 weeks, that may well get higher. I would quiz the hospital where you had the test and get some advice.

My readings have shot up dramatically just from 28 weeks to 29 weeks so I am now on insulin - that was with watching my diet aswell!! I think you need some more answers...

Hope you get the answer that you want though.

Agree with Tee2072 - definitely get that checked out - there is plenty you can do! At the very least, you should be referred to a diabetes consultant and a dietician. Don't worry - you can probably bring your blood glucose down by controlling your diet but they should have referred you immediately for that support!

Good luck, hope all goes well for you.

Now I am panicing, why did the midwife not say it was a problem? Who can I call, it was the midwife that did the test, the same midwife I have seen throughout the pregnancy. The reading was done at 28 weeks and I am now 33 weeks, so it has been nearly 5 weeks. Would I have any symptoms? The blood test also said my iron levels were low at 9.4 and again this was 5 weeks ago and I was only told today. I don't understand how they do these tests and then don't give you the results. What should I do about GD, have I got GD with a reading of 7.4?

You need to call your midwife and insist she refer you to a diabetes education centre and a dietician.

Your symptoms could be:

Extreme thirst leading to peeing a lot (although hard to tell when PG since you pee a lot anyway!)

If your MW isn't receptive, ask to speak to her supervisor. You really need to push for this and let someone know that this is not acceptable treatment.

I'm not sure 7.4 is that high for a gtt reading. See www.labtestsonline.org.uk/understanding/analytes/glucose/test.html.

It would be high for a fasting glucose reading( before the glucose drink) but not for a readng after the glucose drink- so you maybe ok.
But you def should have got your results within the week not 4 weeks later. If no sugar is showing in urine dip test your midwife does then your sugars are under control - don't panic.I'm sure if there was aproblem it would be flagged up.
