Strep B???

Found out yesterday that dd1 has a strep B infection in her throat (Drs at hospital took a swab two weeks ago but only phoned yesterday to say the results had come back and she should have some antibiotics!!) She has recovered from what she was in hospital for (suspected meningitus) and now has chickenpox... so not sure whether she should even have the antibiotics but that is one for another thread!!

Anyway, what I wanted to know here was, I am 34 weeks pregnant and I know that Strep B can cause problems in a newborn (although don't know many details). Am I more likely to have Strep B given that DD has had it? Should I phone my midwife to ask about being tested, or should I wait until I see her again in a couple of weeks, or should I just not worry about it?!!

Any advice much appreciated.

I would phone your midwife and let her know about the Strep B and the chickenpox.

Have just been reading a bit about Group B strep in pregnancy and there is a support group here which may have info.

Sure someone else we be along shortly with actual experience though!

Have already told her about the chickenpox (saw her earlier this week before I knew about the strep B!) and it's fine as I had it when I was little, and it's not really dangerous at this stage of pregnancy anyway.
Will have a look at the support group - thanks Juwesm.

Mersmam - you can get test from that support group that you do yourself, post back to them and get results within 48 hours. Test between 35-37 weeks and costs £32. SO WORTH IT.

Had family tragedy of SILs baby dying at 4 days old due to Group B Strep. Better safe than sorry I say.

Thanks Wilkie. Will check with my midwife first if I can have it done on the NHS, but otherwise will look into buying the test.
