Hello. I have been anemic for a good few weeks now. I am not getting on with iron tablets AT ALL and have tried a few different ones (prescribed) and all have me projectile vomiting soon after taking them. I Have bloods on Monday to determine if I can give birth at the birthing centre or not. I have some questions about spatone:

  • It says to take 1 a day or up to 2 during pregnancy. Should I be taking 2 a day?
  • Why are they so bloody expensive?! Is there any way I can get them on prescription or something? It cost me about a fiver for a pack of 14 which is one week at 2 a day!
  • Where is the cheapest place to buy?
  • Is it too late now to boost my iron with spatone before my bloods on monday?

Anything in particular I should know?

  • 1 a day is fine, but perhaps if I had the bloods you are going to have I'd go for 2/day til then....
  • They are that expensive because they have something relativley difficult to source in them, although it's very effective. Because it's a kind of iron your body can use efficiently, you only need a very little. Iron tablets are cheap because they have very cheap chemicals in them, and your body only absorbs a very little of it each time.
  • Cheapest is probably online (not useful if you're needing an impact by monday). I Always used to get mine from their website, unless there was an offer at Boots
  • No idea bout the Monday question, but I used to feel better within a matter of hours.

I've been taking them since I stumbled upon a funny little shop near the spring in Wales on a walking weekend some 10/12 years ago.. at that point they only did mail order, and they didn't ahve any presence iyswim. I think the stuff is a miracle worker. and no, I don't work for them. Just wish I coudl get it in this country (Oz) for the price it is in teh UK...

How many weeks are you? Can you take some, have the tests, and then ask for another test in a week or so if necessary? It seems arbitary to mamke you stick to one blood test when in theory it might change further after this, and it has such a big impact on your birth outcome....

Good luck

Just found this astonishing paper on their website. Indicates that serum (blood) levels of iron increased to a maximum of 3 hours after it was taken. They were taking 2 sachets a day.

NB - I don't know that it's the serum level that's measured in your blood test, but must be worth a go.

  • The study was partially paid for by Spatone, but it was still carried out by the Prof. of Haematology at the University of WAles, and accepted for publication in the Clinical Laboratory Haematology Journal, which is no small deal...

Thank you. I am going to take 2 a day. I am 36 weeks (will be nearly 37 weeks when I have the test) which is why I don't have much time. I can probably request to have them taken again if they are not high enough, but I am expecting to not make it till 40 weeks so it might not work out like that.
