Im 23st and i have just found out im pregnant massive shock as i didn't think i could .I am very worried about my size when i start showing im going to look massive. Some people say it is not good to lose weight in pregnany not talking crash diet just sensible eating and light exercise as really over eat at moment but sickness is helping that.Has anyone had same experience or any advice. So scared the doctor is going to be horiffed and will try and tell me its to dangerous to carry a baby at my weight.Apart from size im am really looking forward to it as my boys are 13 and 15 and having a baby will be great

you can still follow slimming world while pregnant if you wanted to sign up to that. I am a very overweight mum[20st] and have been that weight when I concieved all 4 of my children. I am currently 27wks and have lost about 1st in weight since being pg which is exctly what happened with all the others. Have never had any comments from gps etc about my weight apart from with DS I needed an extra scan due to maternal habitus[being fat] but didnt happen with either dds or this one.

I think the advice (I'm no doctor) is for you to eat very sensibly and try to minimise weight gain. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes following an early test at 16 weeks, due to PCOS. I had to cut out sugar etc and aim for 20 minutes exercise a day. I've done that, and think that I have lost weight. I'm definitely smaller in this pregnancy than in my last, and baby is fine.

I feel so much better than I did in my last pregnancy, where I vegged out and slobbed on the sofa. So you might be fine!

Congratulations.

ScummyMummy · 25/03/2009 17:01

Congratulations.

I'm not an expert but I'm sure it can be done. Sensible eating and gentle exercise sound like a great idea and you can get further advice fronm your midwifery and doctor team as necessary, I'd have thought.

It's nice to see someone with an even bigger age gap than me! I have 10 year old twins and am expecting a new one in August. Agree that it's really exciting starting all over again.

Mummyfor3 · 25/03/2009 17:06

bigmuther, you will be fine, congratulations!

Can I give you the HCP perspective :
There is no denying being significantly overweight has risks mainly for you, to lesser extent for the baby. However as above posters have pointed out overweight pregnancies happen all the time and are successful usually, thankfully.

Do not "go on a diet", try to make what you eat count ie cut down or avoid altogether anything that gives you only empty calories. So anything that has no nutritional value but lots of calories/salt/fat/E numbers etc etc try and avoid. That does unfortunately include a lot of goodies, but there you go! I agree with llareggub, your aim is to minimise wt gain and if you lose a bit of extra insulation all the better.

Stay active and enjoy this pregnancy.
I hope all will be well.

Congratulations and try not to worry too much. I was 16 stones when I became pregnant with both my DSs and everything was fairly straightforward. I naturally felt like eating healthier and was less inclined to snack and as a result actually lost a little weight when pregnant without trying at all. The midwife said that larger ladies often dont gain much if anything so you may find that. I hope that you get nice, supportive doctor and midwife.

Reesie · 25/03/2009 19:06

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Please do not get too worried. I work as a midwife and I have cared for mums who have increased BMI's such as yours.

I would seriously consider looking at a healthy eating plan - my hospital run a pregnancy slimming world class which works really well. You can also go to a local slimming world group (It's free when you are pregnant!)

There are increased risks when you are pregnant which your consultant will discuss with you when you have your first appointment. However, you will have extra monitoring to address and manage those risks.

Good luck with your lovely new baby!

Congratulations. Not long after the NHS said ~2 years ago that "fat women can't get PG" my 21 stone friend announced her FOURTH!

Last year a 17 stone friend got pregnant and after giving birth was 15 stone.

She didn't deliberately diet but just felt continuously nauseous - and certainly not complaining about her weight loss.

Yes, you can diet when you're pregnant - just know of course that if you cut corners nutritionally your little bundle of joy will steal your nutrient reserves making YOUR hair/teeth/tits fall off!

Very good article in all the papers today about a lady who lost a lot of weight during pregnancy.

I for one am currently on a diet and would like to lose a little more during my pregnancy.

Perhaps the ante natal swimming classes could benefit you

Hi hun.
I’m wondering how you’re getting on? I’ve just come across your thread and I’ve just found out I’m pregnant and nearing 23st xx

TwinkleStars15 · 01/10/2019 15:42

@MrsWilson69 this thread is over 10 years old.

Slimming world is amazing

Teddybear45 · 01/10/2019 18:13

the ‘don’t diet’ rule only applies up to a BMI 30-35. Once you are over that the midwife will actively encourage you to diet healthily. You could start now by reviewing your diet (and counting the calories you already eat) to find some easy swaps and ways to reduce 300 calories per day.

Jesskir89 · 01/10/2019 18:29

I'm overweight by 4 stone or so and have been following slimming world. I'm almost 16 weeks and have only gained 3.5lb. My auntie however, was about 20 stone when she fell pregnant and used it as an excuse to eat more and gained 7 stone during pregnancy! She was huge and made labour difficult for her. So my advice from what she went through is to follow slimming world and limit weight gain as much as possible, which it sounds like you're trying to. Congratulations and good luck :)

MrsWilson69 · 02/10/2019 08:41

Thanks for replying!
Yeah - it's kicked my brain into gear so won't be eating any of the shit I used to so that will help massively. Also, the not drinking!!

SnowyGlowy65 · 11/02/2021 10:03

Hi Everyone, I have been trying to conceive since my miscarriage in 2012 with no success. After iv therapy, massage etc I am finally ovulating! Problem being I have had pcos since 17, I'm now 36 and also type 2 diabetic. I'm just under 23 stone and still trying desperately to lose weight.
I'm so worried that if I am lucky enough to fall pregnant, something will happen because of my weight and/or diabetes.
Is there anyone in a similar situation that has had any success?
