Slapped cheek ....what is the risk to me and what do I do about it?

Two friends of mine have said that their kids have got slapped cheek.
The one friend who is pg, has had a blood test.

I havent been in direct contact with either of the children recently, but I have with the mums.

Am I at risk? Do I see the doc for blood test?

i think you need to see your doctor. i think it's quite contagious and can be dangerous in early pregnancy, but so much a risk later on.

sorry, don't mean to panic you i'm no expert.

thanks choufleur, I know its a risk to pg women, but didnt know if I was at risk from just speaking with the mums and not the infected children themselves

My dd had it wjen I was 6mths pg. I didn't need anything.

The MW phoned the specialist- I can't remember what he was- but he said it was fine. I think it may depend on how far on you are.

Im 7 weeks, I think its worse in early pregnancy
Would it make any difference though if i havent had any direct contact?

I'm pretty sure my dd has slapped cheek at the moment and I'm 16 weeks pregnant. I've spent a long time looking up slapped cheek and pregnancy on the net.

It seems to be mostly a problem between 9 and 20 weeks. If you get it between these dates there is a slighly increased chance that things will go wrong. I've found two NHS web pages that give different stats, so I"m not sure which to believe. However, between 50 and 60% of adults will already have had slapped cheek and so cannot get it again. If you have already had it, then there is not a problem for your pregnancy. A blood test will determine if you have already had it. I would have thought that you would need to have direct contact with an infected person to get it. However, I suppose there is a possibility that one of the mothers may have caught it but be symptomless at the moment.

I can't do links, but there is a section on NHS direct on slapped cheek.

best to get youtr midwife to do a blood test to check and see if you're immune to it (have had it before). if you are immune then chances are you'd be fine. if you are not immune they may repeat the test.
i'm a teacher and had it going round school recently..was totally paranoid about it all, especially as the bloods took 2 weeks to get back! its a tricky one as well, because there is a 20day incubation period with slapped check & when the child's cheek goes red, they are over the infectious period. good luck.

You aren't at risk unless you've had direct contact. If one of the Mum's (that you spoke to) gets it you may want to consider going to the Dr's for a blood test. As Neloara said, chances are you are immune anyway.

Yes being a contact of a contact isn't a real exposure, unless the secondary contact later develops into a case (IYSWIM).

Being 7/40 you should be outside the classic risk period. Parvo B19 is not considered to be a risk in early pregnancy.

Have a look at previous threads of mine, I was exposed via my son's childminder's children and did get it. Had immediate blood test which showed that I was immune and was also in the middle of a full blown attack. Cue fortnightly growth scans for three months and a small period of panic till I did some research and sorted my head out. In short it's still highly, highly unlikely that anything will go wrong but you really do need to speak to your midwife or doctor and get them to arrange an immediate blood test to be sure. The HPA web pages are an excellent resource on parvo too.

Sorry that should be that I was not immune - completely destroys the point of the post otherwise! Doh!
