I went straight away when I had a positive test (Um, yesterday!). Just to see what to do from here. Good Luck, x.

deanychip · 24/03/2009 15:53

Mine says that he doesn't really like referring you to the midwife until you're at the eight week mark. It's very boring; I go in and say 'I'm pregnant!' and he says cautiously 'Is this good news?' before working out the due date and packing me off. And that's it.

Not a lot really!! She said to book with the Antenatal clinic at the surgery and had a feel of my tummy but said she couldn't feel anything yet. I guess the Antenatal clinic might give me more information. She said she could sent a test away for me if I wanted but though the home ones I had done were fairly conclusive.

She was sending the test away today and I have antenatal clinic tomorrow at 2pm.

She also said to start thinking about where I would like to have it but I felt it was a bit early for that and a bit hard to get my head round! She also advised to be cautious as things can go wrong and said she would advise not telling too many people at the moment.

I went to the doctors at 5 weeks. He wrote to the hospital to get me under the consultant, and said make an appointment with the MW at 8 weeks.

You may want to do a bit of research into which hospital you want to go under... even if you want a homebirth. I'm a naughty girl and if I'm not allowed a HB won't be giving birth at the hospital where I'm at for MW and antenatal care, I will turn up as an emergency at a different one that's far away but much nicer for the final push.

Congratulations

Oooh, and don't forget to get your free folic acid if you're not already taking it.

I went as soon as I found out. I didn't see my midwife until 11 weeks but then found out I should have been told by my GP to make an appointment to see her around 8 weeks!

Joycey29 · 27/03/2009 10:24

Am 5 weeks - just booked in with midwife who will contact me soon with appt. Haven't bothered with doc as useless on prevous pregnancies.....

Here we see a mw straight away, no GP involvement at all. You just make an appointment at the doctors surgery for the day the mw visits. Very handy as I keep having mcs at around the 6.5 weeks mark, so because I'm 'in the system' fairly soon after testing positive they recognise the mcs as 'real' and I'm now seeing someone at the hospital. The idea of waiting until 8 weeks and having to go through these each time without a mw to phone would be horrible.

I'm 5 weeks pg at the momet so waiting and hoping that this one will stick .

As you're finding out, there is no correlation between how things are done in different parts of the country. Sometimes it's helpful and other times frustrating (here we have no routine early scanning for recurrent mcs for example).

Congratulations and good luck !

I went at 8 weeks and got told off for not going sooner. In my surgery, they send off a urine sample to confirm you are pg(takes anywhere from 3-5 days), then you book in with the doctor, then you are referred to the midwives who you are supposed to see at 10 weeks.

Secretary "forgot" to type up my referral and then when I chased, faxed it through to the labour ward rather than the ante-natal clinic so I was somewhat delated-saw a mw at end of 11 weeks in the end.

Give your surgery a ring and see what their policy is, I'd have got the ball rolling a lot sooner if I'd known.
