20 week scan showed choroid plexus cyst - marker for Trisomy 18/ Edwards Syndrome

Had the 20 week scan yesterday and got a bit of a shock. Baby has a choroid plexus cyst in his brain ventricle. This is one of the soft markers for Trisonomy 18/ Edwards Syndrome. The positives are that this is the only marker present and no other anomalies were present.
They told me the cut off age for this being 'an issue' is 32, I am 33. So the odds of him having Trisonomy 18 are 1/190 based on my age.

The hospital were keen for me to have an amnio and I have to go back next week to tell them my decision. We have decided not to have the amnio and to focus on the positives.

I found a few posts on this in the archives, but thought I would post my own. I will update this in August when he is born .

I had the same when I was 32 and pregnant with my daughter. She had three large cysts.

She is now a bright and healthy (nearly) four year old. It became obvious towards the end of the pregnancy that she was fine - apparently Edwards babies don't grow properly towards the end - and I was HUGE.

This time I had a 1/168 chance of Downs and opted for an amnio. It was all clear.

The deciding factor for me (on the amnio) was that children with Edwards do not tend to survive. This meant I was risking an amnio for the chance of knowing beforehand that my baby might die shortly after birth. The Edwards syndrome itself would (probably) not be long term because the baby would (probably) not survive - though there are exceptions.

Downs is obviously quite different and we felt we needed to know if we were facing bringing up a child with long term needs.
