I just went for a check up ay my g.p.s and when he had a hunt for the heartbeat with the doppler he couldn't find it.
Now he tried to reassure me that it's perfectly normal if baby is lying the wrong way around but i would feel a lot better if i knew someone else had experienced the same thing. I had an anomaly scan last week and everything was fine. Is it just the little so-and-so messing with me or should i be worried?

Do you feel the baby move at all?

compo · 23/03/2009 19:28

could you go to your nearest epu for an emergency scan if you can't feel any movement?

traceybath · 23/03/2009 19:28

GP's aren't always that great at finding heartbeats. But saying that agree with cote - can you feel the baby move?

goingtohaveagoodnightssleep · 23/03/2009 19:28

If you can still feel the baby moving there is no worry. If you do feel worried call the maternity unit and they will find the heartbeat for you to put your mind at rest.

morningpaper · 23/03/2009 19:29

GP's are a bit crap at that sort of thing. Have you felt the baby move? Why were you at GP and not midwife? Was your 22 week scan fine?

Personally I would pop to the unit NOW and check, it will only take 10 minutes and will put your mind at rest

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 23/03/2009 19:31

Can you feel any movements? Try drinking cold water/hot chocolate etc.

Perhaps you could see your midwife tomorrow if you're still worried. The GP is right about the position, but (IME anyway) GPs are not always as good as finding a hb as midwives are. It happened to me when I was about 15 weeks pg with ds.

ben5 · 23/03/2009 19:31

go and have it checked out. piece of mind if nothing else

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 23/03/2009 19:31

oops, x-posted with everyone!

mrsgboring · 23/03/2009 19:32

Was there other noise on the doppler, e.g. placenta swooshes? You are supposed to get referred straight away to the labour ward if GP can't find heartbeat, I thought?

tiggerlovestobounce · 23/03/2009 19:33

IF you can feel the baby moving then I wouldnt worry. Otherwise you should get it checked out.

trixiechick · 23/03/2009 19:57

i can't be sure about movements i want to feel them so much i don't know if i'm imagining it. i think i'll go to the midwife tomorrow to get her to try again. I just broke a bowl and burst into uncontrollable crying. i can't do anything tonight.

have you had a 22 week scan?

dizzydixies · 23/03/2009 20:00

trixiechick have you tried having a bath and having a sugary drink like cocacola - not normally recommended but anything to give them a wee sugar hit

CoteDAzur · 23/03/2009 20:01

Definitely go to midwife tomorrow.

Good luck.

morningpaper · 23/03/2009 20:04

Do you have your husband with you? I would just drive along to labour ward now. Then you can have a nice calm night's sleep knowing everything is ok rather than fretting all night

Lulumama · 23/03/2009 20:04

if i were you i would call the MW now, speak to someone on AN ward and get seen

if you have an anterior placenta then it can cushion movement, which means it is harder to feel kicks, but that should not affect hearing the heartbeat.

it can be harder for a GP to find a HB , but at 25 weeks, it should not be impossible.

I would speak to somoene tonight, you are not going to get much sleep anyway

psychomum5 · 23/03/2009 20:05

eat someting very very cold, like ice. that always used to set mine off.

if you are really fretting tho, ring the maternity unit. I used to, and they would happily have me in for a quick tracing to reassure, even at 25wks.

I am sure it is all ok, and baby is just lying the worng way

Goober · 23/03/2009 20:07

Something very sweet like a Mars bar should get you some movement too.
Lots of luck.

Lulumama · 23/03/2009 20:14

i think the fact that no HB was heard is more of a potential issue than the movement.

compo · 23/03/2009 20:15

agree with Lulumama

liahgen · 23/03/2009 20:16

trixie,

Please go and get checked out now. Let us know how you are.

unmumsnetty hugs to you. x

compo · 23/03/2009 20:16

can someone take you to your nearest maternity/antenatal hospital?

RockinSockBunnies · 23/03/2009 20:17

I'd go to the maternity unit at your local hospital now if you're concerned. I went so many times when I was pregnant with DD and worried about movements etc.

Did the GP not say anything at all after failing to find the heartbeat?

Lulumama · 23/03/2009 20:18

I do not wish to scare the OP, as it is more likely all is well and the GP was inept with the doppler, BUT it should be fairly easy to hear a HB at 25 weeks as the uterus is risen well up out of the pelvis and the fundus should be a few cm above the belly button, so it is not like finding a HB at 10 weeks...

i really think she should call the ante natal ward , explain the situation and be seen tonight.. it is not going to be easy waiting until tomorrow to find out if all is well

psychomum5 · 23/03/2009 20:19

lulu, what I thought they meant by had she felt movement would be that if she can feel baby, then clearly there must be a heartbeat, and so the doc just couldn;t find it earlier due to how baby was lying.

no heartbeat can be easily explained at this stage IME, it happened to me each pregnancy at least once, altho I was then sent to be traced that same day as the docs knew how fretful in can make you.
