Will I get SPD and/ or Pre - eclamsia again in my next pregnancy?

Im not sure if I should have posted in this topic or conception but hey ho!

Basically, me and DH have been discussing TTC no 2. The problem is, I was very ill during my last pregnancy I had severe SPD from about 30 weeks and then had pre eclamsia and was delivered at 38 weeks. I was also extremely ill after giving birth and was suspected to have postpartum cardiomyopathy (heart condition) although by the time proper tests were given they presumed that my heart had managed to correct itself so this was never confirmed.

I would love to have another DC but worry about being so ill, I dont know if my body could take it! Does anyone know the chances of getting SPD or pre - eclamsia with the next pregancy - is there a higher chance?

I did ask midwife about this but was never given a proper answer. Has anyone else experienced getting any of these conditions with with more than one pregnancy?

Hiya, not sure about SPD as didn't have it first pg (have it now though, it sucks)
I did however, have PE. I was induced at 39+4 because of it. My BP had been slowly rising for weeks before. Mine was very gradual.
This pg I am at 36+3 at the moment and so far (touch wood) have had no signs or symptoms of PE. (If this was last pg I would have had rising BP for weeks already). This pg has been totally different. BP totally normal, no swelling, excessive weight gain etc. It's been great. I do have SPD though which I didn't have before, but it really shows that even in the same woman, no 2 pregnancies are the same.
Hope this rambling helps in some way!
Good luck.

I had bad SPD from 20 weeks. Been advised that the risk in a 2nd preg is higher than for someone who's never had it, but not much. If your SPD was related to imbalanced joints then yoga and physio can help keep it at bay - mine wasn't.

I was told that as I had severe SPD during my first pg(on crutches then eventually bedrdden), I would get it again during subsequent pgs.

Now the good bit - I had slight twinges during 2nd pg but asked for referral to physio straight away and it didn't get any worse.

Nothing at all during 3rd.

Sorry don't know anything about pre-eclampsia.

I had moderate SPD with my first pregnancy. Had it a little in the second one, but nowhere near as bad.

I had PE in first pregnancy (high BP from 34 weeks, in and out of hospital from 35 weeks and would have been induced at 38 weeks but DS decided to come along anyway). In second pregnancy, the only time my BP was high was at 40+3, the day before DD was born.

So in my experience, a second pregnancy was much better (as was the birth ).

I had PE in both my pregnancies, but with my first had it severely and fairly early on, resulting in delivery of DS at 30wks. I believe that early-onset PE often means around a 25% chance of re-occurrence in subsequent pregnancies- but any type of PE in a previous pregnancy does mean you are at slightly higher risk of developing it again compared to the risk of the "general population".

If possible I would ask for a referral (by your GP) to an obstetric consultant for a pre-conception meeting to discuss PE and the chances of re-occurrence. For what it's worth even though I did develop PE in my second pregnancy it was a lot milder and later than in my first (but I was on low-dose aspirin due to the high risk of PE which probably helped greatly, but is not routinely offered to those who had later onset PE).

Good luck with it all!
