Hi there,

I had a Glucose Test on Thursday this week, but purely because my Mum has late-onset Diabetes Type 2. All three of my sisters were tested too and were all fine.

Mine has come back positive and I don't know why. I've never been overweight in my life, walk my dog twice a day, had no signs of sugar in my urine and don't eat sweet things other than Fruit!! I'm really gutted because my initial conversation with the hospital is that I will have to have insulin injections because my levels were so high. Pre-test result was 4.9 but post-test result was 9.6!! Still not sure why this has happened.

One minute they're telling me that my Papp-A is low so I have to have growth scans in case of a small baby and now they're telling me that I have to have them because of risk of a big baby!! She's currently back on average for her age (28 weeks)...

Anyone have any advice?

Sorry, that last paragraph should have read "she's currently bang on average for her age...".

I don't really know why you have GD but your sisters didnt, as you know you are more likely to get it because of family history.

Please don't get too anxious about the injections. I was insulin dependant (gd) but had a good pg for both dd1 and dd2.

My advice would be

  • test your blood sugar regularly

  • attend your diabetes clinic

  • keep to a low GI diet and look after yourself.

I was induced for both births both were well and not too big (7lb 10 and 7lb 12)

Good luck

No one really knows what causes GD, except that it is known that the placenta soaks up insulin like a sponge. It is nothing you did or didn't do.

I'm Type II who was diet controlled until I became pregnant. Don't fret about insulin, its really no big deal.

As margo said, test often and listen to what your diabetic nurses/consultants tell you.

We do have a Pregnancy and Diabetes thread on here: thread

Its not very fast moving, but we all check in now and then and there's lots of good advice on there! Good luck!

Thanks so much everyone for all your help!!

Back to the hospital today as they gave me the wrong strips for my blood testing machine!! The nurse I spoke to was really nice though and offered to answer all my questions.

The first clinic is on Thursday and I'm booked in at 9.30am...

I'll jump onto the other thread Tee when I get back.

Thanks again!!
