Double Buggy Questions

Sorry to start something that has no doubt been done a million times but I have a few questions.

We cannot fit a double side by side in our door so we either need tandem or phil and teds. Have slight aversion to P and Ts as I don't like the bottom seat frankly but am also concerned by the other options....which seem limited and heavy. I've stopped a few mothers/childminders in the street with tandems and so far no one is very positive. Is anyone really pro their tandem....what make.
Has anyone used the saftey first duo - what's it like?
Is P and T the only real option?

Thanks so much for your help - much much appreciate.

Mothercare have a good tandem one which is quite compact and cheap too. (It's a brown colour) I agree about Phil and Teds too. Although do have to say that double buggies are a pain whichever one you get!

Evie, my SIL has a Jane PowerTwin which she's used for 2 sets of siblings and she says it's great. hth

cktwo · 20/03/2009 17:07

I was acerse to P&T until I had to get one as it we's outgrown out Nipper and it was the only one to fit my SN 4 year old and a 2 year old.
And TBH, it's great. Easy to push, folds up small.
If you're not happy with the baby seat for a newborn and I wouldn't use it) you could always sling it until baby it big enough for the proper seat below.

Cosatto lite.
Mothercare has a version to this too.
I candy Pear.

CarGirl · 20/03/2009 21:20

I candy Pear is a nightmare, very heavy and expensive.

QueenFee · 20/03/2009 21:22

I had a graco tandem last time. I have bought a Powertwin this time and eeveryone I have spoke to about them says they are great - but I will let you now in the summer when I start using mine!
My sister still swears by her mothercare one (same as Graco) but I found it a bit heavy long term. Have a huge shopping basket though

My back wheel snapped off my cossatto this week - it wasn;t the lite one though, it was a tandem, with the back seat raised slightly. I loved it, really comfy for both kids, high handle bar. Got it second hand off ebay a year ago, and have totally abused it tbh - older kids sitting on hood, or on back shopping tray etc!
I am currently searching ebay and other sites for another buggy - ideally I want an option that will allow me to transport 3 toddlers, as I cm, and often have 3 2 yr olds. The buggy board fits on back of my twin mclaren, but its bloody heavy to push, and 2 yr olds can't see anything, plus they get too tired. Am looking at other options!

LackaDAISYcal · 20/03/2009 21:27

is it for a toddler and a baby? or two babies? Is for two babies, the P&T isn't an option as you can't use the underslung eat until they are about five months old.

I did some testing of various doubles a while ago (in this months M&B magazine) and have to day that my own P&T beat them all hands down for versatility and ease of use.

The icandy pear was awful...big and bulky and my dinky 19mo old DD had to be scrunched up to fit into the cosytoes on the toddler seat and her head was actually making a hump in the hood.....and they say it goes up to three years!!

jane powertwin good, but really difficult to push as it kept wanting to pull to the right. It was also really unstable going up and down kerbs and nearly tipped over a couple of times which was quite scary on a busy road.

the best side by side by far was the McLaren Techno, folds easily, best fit through doors (you can pull up the folding thing with the babies in if it is a tight squeeze and it gives you a bit more room...although I'm sure this isn't advisable from a safety point of view... and it's lightweight.

Still not a patch on the P&T though

Chellesgirl · 20/03/2009 21:38

yes the cosatto duo tandem is like the graco duo sport, very heavy. I didnt realise the I candy pear was so bad. It looks amazing and was gonna buy this next time.

Yes I agree with the Maclaren Techno being the best side by side. It has v.good ratings.

Have a search on the multiples topic too - lots of discussion and advice about buggies there.

How wide is your door? Have you checked the actual width of some of the side by sides, which are quite slim? My Nipper fits through the door, and is actually wider than some I looked at e.g. Mountain Buggy.

Not what you originally asked I know, so ignore at will!

BikeRunSki · 23/03/2009 13:40

I have a P&T, but just for one baby. I bought it when he was about 5 months old and the elderly Buzz we had got from friends packed up. I absolutely love it. Sturdy but light, narrow enough to go round shops, through doors etc (which is you take for granted until you can't do it), rolls easily on pavements and bridleways.

Have you looked at the Mamas and Papas Pulse Twin? A friend of mine got one for her twins (it is suitable from birth), as it was the narrowest twin buggy she could find. She never seems to have any trouble when I am out with her. Here are the details:
Pulse Twin.

thanks so much for the message - will have a little look. Have measured door again and that part is fine it is actually gate into door if you know what I mean. Have looked at cutting some off but actually have decided that is silly! Maximum width we can have is 70 and that is a squeeze - all others seem to be about 75 which seems like no difference but clearly it is!
anyway - will keep thinking but thank you all so much. I fear phil and teds may win out and no doubt i'll be a massive convert. Just wish micralite would make a double!!

I have to say that the Phil and Teds is fab. There is nothing wrong with the bottom seat for the baby. You can just put them in their cocoon and away you go. It also rocks them to sleep. Plus when your eldest wants to walk everywhere you can just use the P&Ts as a single.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 24/03/2009 09:42

I've had a quite a few so ime-

Maclaren double- I'm short (well 5"4')and found the handle uncomfortable after short distances.

Jane powertwin- felt like I was pushing a bus, very long and quite heavy particularly as the eldest goes in the front as they get bigger it gets more difficult to manoevere and as a previous poster noted, more unstable going up and down curbs.

After some lots of reading I now have a P & T waiting in the loft for dc3. I was very unsure but after puttimg it up and trying it with dc's 1&2 I'm now a convert

Mutsy urban rider. Chassis will take click on double seat, with rear one suitable from birth. Good offroad I believe. Quite bulky, bbut not as long as a Jane double or as wide as many others.

I got chassis and duoseat off e-bay. They come up pretty regularly so can bide your time and not get sucked into a bidding frenzy.

I haven't used it as a double yet, but will be doing so frighteningly shortly!

littleM · 25/03/2009 14:21

I've just ordered a obaby apex tandem - mainly because it is really light. Am not expecting to use it that much as dd1 is 2. Toys R Us also do a light tandem. Both of these look ok for 1 older child and newborn not for twins. Could turn out to be useless when it arrives but will let you know.
