Confriming pg at doctors-is it needed?

I got a BFP on one of those poundland tests a couple of days ago, and my period still hasn't arrived, but the doctors office say i have to confirm it by taking in a wee sample to them. Is it possible that i might not be pg?

Congratulations

I've not heard of this before. I recently got a BFP with my 3rd dc. I went to the docs last week and the GP simply checked/confirmed my dates and booked me in for an appointment with the midwife.

lynniep · 19/03/2009 12:23

how wierd - my doctors are exactly the opposite - if you've done a home test they dont want to know because 'they're just as accurate'
As far as I'm aware its very rare to get a false positive as you have to have the pregnancy hormones in your urine to create a positive test. even with the cheapo tests.

mrsboogie · 19/03/2009 12:24

it is unusal - I often used to wonder at the fact that they take it for granted that you are actually pregnant when you have those midwife visits early on. I have never had it confirmed at the doctors.

PlumBumMum · 19/03/2009 12:25

My gp asked me the first time round did I want to give a sample but after that they have just booked me in

LissyGlitter · 19/03/2009 12:26

they didn't do a test with my last child, I'm wondering if it's a new thing? they said i just need to come and get a pot, do an early morning wee in it, then take it back and i'll have the result in two working days. Then they will refer me straight to the midwife.

When I went to the doctor pg with DS, he said they never bother now as the commercial tests are even better than the NHS ones and you don't get a false positive. So if you've had a positive and you don't have your period, you're pregnant.

LissyGlitter · 19/03/2009 12:28

ace. So I am having another child. Brill. I would have felt such a fool if I wasn't!

I suppose it's possible that they have an incident of time-wasting, or even someone wrongly thinking they were pg and being booked in with the midwife. Maybe they have changed their standard policy for this?

yomellamoHelly · 19/03/2009 12:38

Never had this. Is how I originally thought it worked before ds1, but am on pg 3 now without docs doing anything but starting the paperwork.

PlumBumMum · 19/03/2009 12:47

cogratulations btw

aideesmum · 19/03/2009 14:36

Yes I had to provide a wee sample when pg with my ds but that was nearly 5 years ago, not sure if they still do it. I think it just depends on the doctor you see or the surgery you go to.

Trikken · 19/03/2009 14:51

I went to the dr today, she did the test straightaway, and confirmed i was pregnant. Last time they sent it away and didnt find out for a week so was suprised they could do it instantly.

LissyGlitter · 19/03/2009 19:32

Apparently with mine it takes a week, i don't undertand why it does, but it does!

I've never seen a doctor - just rung the surgery and made an appointment for booking with the midwife. Doctors appointment seems like a waste of time to me

MegBusset · 19/03/2009 19:47

They didn't make me do a urine test when I was pregnant with DS (in 2006) but they did make me do one for my current pregnancy, so perhaps it's a recent thing...

feedthegoat · 19/03/2009 19:55

My surgery wouldn't let me see midwife until i'd provided a sample and seen dr.

xxhunnyxx · 19/03/2009 22:08

Maybe the receptionist was new or just confused, they would ask for a sample if somebody wasn't sure if they were pg but even if they wanted to double check for themselves then it wouldn't necessarily have to be a morning sample and they would just do it there and then and not have to wait 2 days to get the result.
Very strange. My GP just asked the date of my last period, worked out my due date and booked me in with the MW.
Congratulations!
I'd just get an appointment to see your GP when u get chance and if they want to do a test u can just do it whilst your there.

ravenAK · 19/03/2009 22:11

With dc3 I rang up & asked if I could just see the MW. Nowt against our lovely GP, just didn't want to clog the system (or waste my own time) having a convo that went:

'Pregnant again'
'OK, make an appointment with the MW'.

They weren't having it - initial GP appointment is practice policy. (But no wee required).

browntrout · 20/03/2009 12:42

with DD1 they took a blood sample to confirm the pregnancy (!) This was 3 years ago. I am pregnant again and this time they took a urine sample. Again, they wouldnt do it there and then and said they would send it off. I dont expect them to call me to let me know the outcome and I have just been booked in to see the MW at 11 weeks. I did ask them about it (braver 2nd time around etc) and they said that they just have a policy of confirming it themselves. Assume it is just in case you are a bit of a numpty who cant be trusted to read a test properly.

LissyGlitter · 21/03/2009 10:54

Well I took my wee in yesterday and they said 2-3 working days till I get the result. I'm nervous now that I read the test wrong somehow!

My Doc wanted to charge me £5 to take a test to confirm I was pregnant! I ahd already taken two HPT and been to EPU so I didn't need it confirmed. He is probably still waiting......

kayzr · 24/03/2009 09:51

Never had to do this. With both my boys I told GP that I was pg, they did blood pressure, worked out date, "Congratulations" and "see MW"
