HCG gone up alot- presumably it is bad news?

Someone (NOT a doc) just told me that my HCG levels have risen rather alot and therefore would mean I was either having a molar pregnancy or have a blighted ovum (twins out of question as have none in family) I guess I should resign myself to this.
On Friday my HCG was 98 and Wednesday, 5 days later it was 1830.
I am having another Friday as they are checking stuff for me as I had a small amount of bleeding (but stopped now)
I take it I should just prepare myself for the worst?
Scan at 4 weeks 5 days showed a sac that measured 3.5mm.

Thanks.

I thought they were meant to double each day. Isn't that about right?

brettgirl2 · 19/03/2009 08:53

Sorry, it's every 2 days so don't know.

TattyCatty · 19/03/2009 08:55

If you had a blighted ovum, your HcG levels would not be rising as much as they should (as a minimum, they should double every 48 - 72 hours). The numbers are not alarmingly high - the doubling is as a minimum and can increase further. If you have already seen a sac at 4 weeks 5 days, that is also a good indicator - my scan at the same stage barely showed a shadow of a sac, and my HcG levels only just about doubled every 72 hours.

Twins are not necessarily out of the question just because there isn't a history in your family. I'm not an expert but I think that it's only non identical twins that are heriditory due to the increased likelihood to release 2 eggs at ovulation. Identical twins are where the egg splits and is effectively a "trick" of nature, so nobody can predict when it might happen.

Hope that you can get some reassurance soon - lots of information at this stage of pregnancy can lead to lots of worry. By the way, my slow rising HcG levels are now a 3 year old DD .

PootleTheFlump · 19/03/2009 08:59

I don't think the HCG thing always works out exactly, and it does depend on your progesterone too. My HCG seems to have risen more than it should have by my calculations, but my progesterone was good so they weren't worried.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having a horrible time, but the information you've been given sounds a little vague. I was led to believe that a molar gave you a massive exponential rise in HCG. I don't think twins are ever out of the question die to genetics as identical twins happen randomly.

Hopefully you can speak to someone more knowledgeable on Friday and things get better for you x

belgo · 19/03/2009 09:00

It could still be twins.

Don't give up hope, or resign yourself to anything, HCGs levels vary from woman to woman. Everything could still be alright. Do you have another scan booked?

PootleTheFlump · 19/03/2009 09:00

x-post tatty!

Hi biggernow, I'm not sure how fast is normal for the HCG to be rising, but I've just looked on a chart that says at 5 weeks pg (which you almost are) the normal range is from 19 to 7,340.

Have a look at this site too - at a glance I would say that you shouldn't be worrying yet.

I had a partial molar last year, and at just over 7 weeks I had an HCG count of over 131,000. I know I was further on than you are now, but at the moment you do seem to be in the normal range, so please try not to worry!

HTH's, and good luck! Please let me know how you get on...

brettgirl2 · 19/03/2009 09:02

Can you speak to a doctor about what they mean?

hazeyjane · 19/03/2009 09:47

I had a molar pregnancy in 2003, and my hcg levels were a lot higher than that, I would wait until you have had your scan on Friday before panicking too much.

Were the hcg levels measured in blood or urine (urine levels are usually lower)?

Fingers crossed for you, and let us know how you get on. x

biggernow · 19/03/2009 11:01

thank you all for your responses.
HCG was measured through blood test.
My progesterone level was 76 yesterday (was 64 on Friday) which Doc seemed to think was ok- but he was a bit ditzy if you know what I mean?
Another blood test tomorrow, and have to wait 2 weeks until another scan.
Still have a very very light brown staining every so often, but they did see I had a small uterine tear (nowhere near sac) which they said COULD have caused bleeding on Monday night (but I can't find any info on this anywhere) The bleeding I did have was bright red, but was not very much.
I convinced myself until yesterday I was just about to miscarry (have 18 mth old son, but had a chemical pregnancy last month) and then at EPU they made me feel that all is not lost, but then I am just not sure. After last month I can't trust anything until I see a blob and then hear a heartbeat...
Will let you know what happens. This is so hard.

I am sorry for your worries - I had some light bleeding during my pg last year - theree episodes between 6 and 14 weeks. when I went for a scan at 7 weeks they couldn't see the heartbeat so sent me have my hcg levels checked - they were worried it was an ectopic. Anyway they told me that my hcg levels were "very high" I think about 80,000 on the second day of testing, and they thought it might be a molar pg. It wasn't. The bleeding stopped, the heartbeat was visible at 8 weeks and all was fine and my boy is now 6 months old.

Try not to worry until you have a reason to!

chocolatine · 19/03/2009 13:21

Hi

PLEASE don't worry about your HCG levels. Mine went up from 340 to 2000 in 3 days at the start of pregnancy and according to my doctors this is perfectly normal. (I'm in France where HCG testing is done for pretty much everyone).

It wasn't twins and I'm now 18 weeks with (touch wood) no problems.

UnrealisticExpectations · 19/03/2009 20:24

I came across your post by accident and I put it on watch just because I really feel for you.

I didn't think I could add anything to the discussion at the time because I've never had my hcg or progesterone measured. In our area it seems to be pretty much standard to leave you to your own devices until your 12 week scan.

I've got to say after your later post, I had browny red spotting/light bleeding from the day my period was due until I was almost 12 weeks with DC1. I told my doc and my midwife but neither seemed to think it was anything to worry about.

But the pregnancy went fine, produced a healthy 7.4lb baby girl who's now 4.7. I had no spotting or vague cramping at all with DC2, who was also a fine healthy baby. A friend had exactly the same with one of her pregnancies but not the other. Both perfectly healthy.

Hope everything goes well for you.

HCG has doubled this time and they seem happy with stuff. just have to wait for scan now.....I just hope 6 weeks 5 days is not too early to get something...

That's fantastic news - you must be very happy. Fingers crossed for your scan - we saw a heartbeat at what we thought was 7 weeks, but later turned out to be 6 weeks 4 days once we'd had our dating scan, so hope that all is good for you too.

UnrealisticExpectations · 20/03/2009 21:29

That's really good news. Hope that helps you feel a little bit better.

monkeybumsmum · 20/03/2009 21:29

You must be relieved biggernow, that's good news

When's your scan? I think it's possible to see a heartbeat sometime between 6+3 and 7 weeks, so let's hope you're lucky and see something. I had a scan once at 6+5 and didn't see anything, but then went back a week later and there the little heartbeat was

Good luck for whenever your scan is!
