Hi, anyone who has taken stemetil before, will it stop the violent retching as well as the actual vomiting? Any advice appreciated.

ooh I was told by my gp that I couldnt take stemetil when I was pregnant

but my gp can be a bit behind the times

audreyraines · 17/03/2009 16:38

yeah, my gp prescribed it, but i still feel really wary of it. i'm just getting to the point where i'll do anything though to stop the vomiting/retching at 15 weeks preg.

Stemitil is considered one of the safest antiemetics in pregnancy, so don't worry on that account . I had it prescribed from 8 weeks, and while it did stop the vomiting on most occasions, I can't say it helped with the nausea that much. While you might still retch, I think it works by suppressing the actual vomiting so may not stop the impulse to be sick iyswim. I think it effects people differently though, so def worth a try

thankyou. am living in fear that it will make me horribly tired, but guess i can only try. i did try to take one this afternoon, but vomited as soon as it started to dissolve!!

Actually I didn't want to mention that the taste of the tablet dissolving also 'set me off' as it were . Also had to take first tablet out to be sick . They do get better though, so worth perservering

audreyraines · 17/03/2009 18:51

oh god, i don't know if i can bear it. will maybe suffer the vomiting, just had a really bad few days in a row and was getting a bit desperate today. can you just swallow it? though i was told specifically not to do it that way.

Hi audrey, I'm taking stemetil and it has stopped the wretching to a degree but not completely. It is loads better though. It doesn't completely cure the nausea either but again it's much better. I'm no longer in serious danger of dehydration and no longer losing weight at a rate of knots

I was given stemetil when my previous antiemetic (avomine) made me very tired - and it has been a revalation, I just have normal pregnancy sleepiness now rather than all consuming tiredness.

If you find that they make you vomit you can ask for buccastem which dissolves in the mouth so you don't have to swallow it.

TigerFeet · 17/03/2009 18:53

Oh do you have the ones that dissolve in your mouth anyway? I have pills that you take in the normal manner.

audreyraines · 17/03/2009 18:56

thanks tigerfeet, i might be better off getting something i can swallow. i can take my pregnancy vitamins and ginger tablets okay. but the taste of that bucastem - bleerrrgh!!

Got to be worth a try!

A note of reassurance - my GP and chemist have both checked the long term effects of stemetil in pregnancy and are happy to keep prescribing/dispensing for as long as I need it.

Tiger, thanks for your help, and hope you are feeling fab soon and can sit down to your favourite dinner one of these days.
