Stupid scan question

I am 8 weeks pregnant and have a scan tomorrow to confirm viability.

Is it ok for me to take my 2 year old daughter with me? My DH will be coming too and so will be able to control her as necessary.

Depends. If it is bad news, will your dd be upset if she sees you upset?

When I went for an early scan there was a couple who bought the whole family their son was with them and he was about the same age as ur lo
hope all goes well, congrats and good luck

Hm, the last time she saw me cry her response was to ask me why I was crying and then to say "these things happen sometimes". She wasn't really fussed. Plus I have had a few crappy scans in the last year and am pretty good at sucking bad news up, so I doubt I will get too weepy.

Might the hospital have a policy that she can't be there?

I've been for a scan at our EPU with ds (I knew I'd mc'd so I wasn't too distraught when it was confirmed), I had the scan in a little side room, a mw assistant looked after ds for the 5 mins or so it took. They didn't bat an eye, were more than happy to look after him. If you're not worried about dd seeing you possibly upset, then go for it, and good luck!

MrsHappy · 16/03/2009 19:47

Cool - sounds ok then. I'm sure I have seen women at the EPAU with their children before but the children are always strapped in a buggy and seem kind of docile. DD is a live wire (and very verbal) so it's a bit different... Oh well DH can sort her out if need be!

I had an early scan today and dh and ds were there. Midwives were brilliant with ds and gave him a 'special' seat to sit in. They told me they wanted kids to have a positve and happy experience when they visited a hospital; thought that was really nice of them. Best of luck for tomorrow MrsHappy

Thanks all. It'll be interesting to see how much DD notices of what's going on. After all of this she'll probably think watching your mother getting fanny-cam'd is normal and not wonder about it at all!

I'm having a scan at 9 weeks on THurs to confirm viability too.
On the notes I got it stated that small children were not to be brought to the scan. That's the first time I have seen that. So my MIL is looking after DS.
Good luck MrsHappy.

I should think your 2 year old would be ok - our hospital is fine with siblings in for the scan but sometimes asks dads to wait outside with them for the first few minutes while they do all the checking.
Its the ones that turn up with mil, mum, friends, etc etc that get up the hospitals nose.

Sorry you've had some bad scans, so have I, lets hope its all lovely and happy news at this scan

worriedamy · 17/03/2009 11:54

Hi

It should say on the letter from the Hospital if they have any limits on the amount of people you can have with you... I know I was only allowed 1 person and it even said on the letter that if we brought a young child along with us, they we would have to make sure they waited outside the room. I dont really understand why, because when we went back for another scan later on there was 7 people in the room altogether when you count me and my partner and 1 midwife, 1 consultant, and 3 members of her 'team'!

MrsHappy · 17/03/2009 13:16

Well, I left DD at home in the end which was just as well because they took ages searching for one of my ovaries. Anyway, everything is fine which is a massive relief. I could have taken her along though and that would have been ok too - she wouldn't have been the only child there.

Unfortunately around us they don't send a letter. Well maybe they do if you go through the formal referral system but I don't have to because I have been at gynae patient at our local hospital in the past.

Good luck with your scan too, Gateau.
